On November 17, the Angola Caála Irrigation District Rehabilitation Project of PowerChina Municipal Construction Company broke ground. Jointly funded by the World Bank and the French Development Agency, the project aims to enhance regional water resource allocation capacity and advance agricultural modernization.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, David Domigos, Mayor of Boentelada Municipality, attended in person and delivered a welcome address, stating: "The Caála Irrigation District Rehabilitation Project is a crucial step in our community's agricultural development. It means more stable water sources, higher yields, and a more prosperous future. On behalf of the municipal government and local residents, I express heartfelt gratitude to all participating parties and pledge full support for the smooth progress of the project."
Edijair de Almeida Quaresma, representative of the World Bank and the French Development Agency, noted that the project is an important component of Angola's agricultural modernization strategy. Once completed, it will improve water use efficiency, benefit thousands of farming households, and provide strong support for food security and rural economic development. The owner's representative from PDAC pledged to assemble a professional team to conduct rigorous whole-process supervision of project quality, safety, environmental protection, and schedule, ensuring the works meet expected standards. The owner unit PDAC stated that it will strictly implement quality, safety, and environmental requirements to ensure the project advances as planned.
The core works of the Caála Irrigation District Rehabilitation Project include the rehabilitation and construction of over 26 kilometers of canals, over 22 kilometers of embankment-top roads and drainage ditches, and the construction of 76 new water intakes and other supporting facilities. Upon full completion, the irrigation area will cover 1,457 hectares of farmland, and the project is expected to significantly increase regional crop yields, enhance drought resistance and disaster prevention capacity, and inject strong momentum into Angola's food security and sustainable agricultural development. It will significantly improve regional water resource use efficiency, optimize farmland irrigation conditions, and lay a solid foundation for local farmers to increase production and income.
The Caála Irrigation District Rehabilitation Project is not only an important measure by the Angolan government to advance agricultural modernization and enhance food security capacity, but also another achievement of the deepening cooperation between China and Angola in the field of infrastructure construction. The implementation of the project will create local employment opportunities, drive the development of related industrial chains, and further promote the long-term development of Angola's agriculture and economy.
