On November 17, the first batch of wind turbines of the 60 MW wind power project in Qonggyai, Shannan, Tibet, undertaken by Kunming Engineering Corporation (Kunming Institute), was connected to the grid for power generation, marking that China's highest-altitude wind power project has officially entered the commissioning and operation stage. The project is located in Zhongdui Village, Qonggyai County, Shannan City, Tibet, with a total installed capacity of 60 MW, installing 11 5.0 MW and one 6.25 MW wind turbine units, along with a supporting 12 MW/48 MWh grid-forming energy storage system. After the project is put into operation, the clean energy delivered annually is expected to meet the electricity demand of approximately 120,000 households, equivalent to an annual reduction of 128,700 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

As the EPC general contractor of the project, Kunming Institute faced extreme environmental challenges including oxygen content only 57% of that in plain areas, day-night temperature differences exceeding 20 degrees Celsius, and a cumulative climb of 1,670 meters along the site roads. It fully leveraged its technical advantages and management experience in high-altitude new energy construction, adopted wind turbine units with grid-forming technology, and for the first time applied single-blade hoisting technology in ultra-high-altitude areas above 5,000 meters, saving about 66% of the working site compared with traditional whole-rotor hoisting and raising the upper limit of effective working wind speed to 10 m/s, laying a solid foundation for the high-quality commissioning of the project.

The successful grid connection of the Tibet Huadian Shannan Qonggyai wind power project not only verifies the feasibility of wind power development in ultra-high-altitude areas, but also provides a replicable and scalable technical and management model for new energy construction in high-altitude and weak-grid areas around the world. Kunming Institute will continue to leverage its comprehensive advantages in the clean energy field and contribute wisdom and strength to building a new energy system and promoting green and low-carbon development.
