On October 14, the dam of the Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station—the world's highest dam, constructed by PowerChina Sinohydro Bureau 7 Co., Ltd.—completed full-section filling up to elevation 2425, and diversion tunnel No. 2 was successfully lowered into place, officially launching the second-phase impoundment and marking another important step toward the goal of commissioning the first generating units.
The Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station dam has a design height of 315 meters and will become the world's tallest dam upon completion. It is a gravelly soil core-wall rockfill dam with a total filling volume exceeding 46 million cubic meters, combining the characteristics of "tall dam, high stress, high water head, high slope, high intensity, and high altitude." The dam type is a gravelly soil core-wall rockfill dam employing a layered structural design, with the core wall at the center and, from the inside outward, the core-wall zone, filter zone, transition zone, rockfill zone, and counterweight zone, representing the highest level of earth-rock dam design and construction worldwide.
The Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station is the upstream controlling reservoir project of the 28-cascade hydropower stations planned on the main stream of the Dadu River. It is located at the junction of Ma'erkang City and Jinchuan County in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province, and is a national key clean energy project under the 14th Five-Year Plan and a key project of the Western Development Strategy. The station has a total installed capacity of 2 million kilowatts and an average annual power generation of 7.7 billion kilowatt-hours over many years. Upon completion, it will increase the dry-season power generation of downstream cascade stations by 6.6 billion kilowatt-hours annually, and is of great significance for enhancing the flood control capacity of downstream towns, improving the power source structure of Sichuan's electric power system, and promoting economic and social development in ethnic minority regions.
