Recently, Chinese construction machinery enterprises have made a big splash at major industry exhibitions across Southeast Asia. For example, at the Indonesia International Mining Exhibition, Zoomlion signed contracts worth a cumulative total of more than 700 million yuan within just two days of the show opening, while Sany Group signed on-site agreements totaling over 2 billion yuan during the exhibition. At the "3rd Changsha International Construction Equipment Exhibition Southeast Asia Sub-Exhibition" held in Malaysia, 11 enterprises including Zoomlion, Sany Heavy Industry, LiuGong Machinery, and Sunward signed contracts totaling more than 2 billion yuan!
The Southeast Asian market has become an important strategic region for Chinese construction machinery going global. With the in-depth implementation of the "Belt and Road" initiative and the continued升温 of ASEAN infrastructure construction, Chinese construction machinery enterprises have made significant progress in this market by leveraging advantages such as geographical proximity, high cost-performance products, and well-developed service networks.

01 The Current State of Chinese Construction Machinery in Southeast Asia
Driven by policies such as the "Belt and Road" initiative and RCEP, and leveraging geographical advantages, high cost-performance products, and good service, the Southeast Asian market has attracted the attention of Chinese construction machinery enterprises. They not only actively participate in the local market through equipment exports, but also enhance brand recognition through investment in plant construction and participation in major engineering projects.
In fierce competition with international brands, Chinese enterprises are gradually gaining more market share from Japanese brands that dominated the market in the early period. Indonesia in particular has long been China's largest export market for construction machinery in Asia; in the first half of this year, cumulative exports to the country reached 1.37 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 28.2%.
Overall, Chinese construction machinery continues to make breakthroughs in the Southeast Asian market, mainly reflected in the following aspects.
On the one hand, localization布局 is deepening. For example, Zoomlion has been accelerating its pace of expanding into the Southeast Asian market in recent years, deploying nearly 30 outlets in Indonesia alone, covering functions such as offices, showrooms, warehousing, and service. Currently, Zoomlion's lifting machinery, concrete machinery, and aerial work machinery rank first in Indonesia's market share, while sales of earthmoving machinery and mining machinery have led the industry in growth for many years.
On the other hand, sales volume and market share continue to climb. From January to August this year, LiuGong's equipment exports to ASEAN countries exceeded 5,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 45%. In the Indonesian market, it achieved a compound growth rate of over 100%, and in the Malaysian market, both sales volume and revenue grew by more than 200% year-on-year.
In addition, Chinese construction machinery is gradually gaining more visibility and recognition in the Southeast Asian market through product structure optimization and electrification transformation, as well as participation in major infrastructure projects. For example, participation in the construction of the China-Laos Railway and the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway has proven the technical reliability and engineering adaptability of Chinese brands.

02 Development Prospects of the Southeast Asian Market
In recent years, Southeast Asia's economy has continued to grow, urbanization has accelerated, and infrastructure construction has flourished, providing broad market prospects for China's construction machinery.
According to relevant statistics, among the top 15 countries by China's construction machinery product export value in 2024, Southeast Asia occupied 4 seats, namely Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines. In particular, Indonesia ranked as China's third-largest export market, with export value reaching 2.259 billion US dollars.
Looking at individual countries, Malaysia, driven by plans such as the "2030 Vision," continues to see large-scale infrastructure projects. The "13th Malaysia Plan" plans investment of 611 billion ringgit (1 ringgit is approximately 0.23 US dollars) over the next five years (2026-2030), focusing on transportation and communications, education, health, water management and housing, green energy, and other fields.
On August 19, Vietnam held groundbreaking and inauguration ceremonies for approximately 250 large-scale projects nationwide, including key projects such as the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge in the Mekong Delta, the Saigon Riverside International Financial Center, and the National Convention Center in Hanoi, covering transportation, urban development, scientific and technological research and development, and other fields, with total investment estimated at 1,280 trillion Vietnamese dong (approximately 50 billion US dollars).
Indonesia, meanwhile, continues to increase investment in infrastructure construction and mining development, providing huge market space for the construction machinery industry. It is understood that Indonesia's coal resource reserves are approximately 58 billion tons, with proven reserves of 19.3 billion tons, of which 5.4 billion tons are commercially recoverable reserves. In addition, the Indonesian government is promoting local processing through the "raw ore export ban," and in the past two years its mining market has reached a scale of hundreds of billions of US dollars, with demand for mining equipment surging.
……
Across Southeast Asia, road, railway, and port construction is in full swing, and the construction machinery market has broad prospects.
In addition, Southeast Asia will also usher in an equipment renewal cycle. For example, Indonesia's construction machinery保有量 at the end of 2023 was approximately 279,000 units, of which equipment in use for more than 10 years accounted for 41.8%, facing relatively large-scale equipment renewal demand.
Overall, Southeast Asian countries are at different stages of development, providing diversified business opportunities for China's construction machinery exports. Traditional earthmoving and concrete machinery are indispensable in real estate and road construction; as environmental awareness increases, demand for energy-saving and environmentally friendly construction machinery is growing; and intelligent and digital products, such as equipment with remote monitoring and intelligent diagnostic functions, are also beginning to gain favor in the market.

03 Challenges Facing Domestic Brands in Southeast Asia
Intense competition from international brands. The Southeast Asian construction machinery market is mainly dominated by internationally renowned brands such as Caterpillar and Komatsu, which occupy most of the market share by virtue of advanced technology, high-quality products, and comprehensive after-sales service. Although Chinese brands are gradually winning market share through cost-effectiveness, competitive pressure remains considerable.
Sales channels and localized services are relatively lagging. Chinese construction machinery in Southeast Asia mainly relies on a small number of agents for promotion, resulting in limited market coverage. By comparison, Japanese and American brands, through long-term deep cultivation of the Southeast Asian market, have established extensive sales networks. The Southeast Asian market has high requirements for after-sales service of construction machinery, but the local after-sales service systems of Chinese enterprises are not yet complete enough.
Political environment and policy risks. The level of economic development in Southeast Asia varies, and the political situations in some countries involve certain uncertainties, which bring risks to the market expansion of construction machinery enterprises. For example, the first phase of the China-Thailand High-Speed Railway project began construction in 2015 and was originally scheduled to open in 2028, but due to multiple changes of government in Thailand, insufficient policy continuity, and multiple external factors, the project has advanced slowly and has so far been only about 35% complete.
Supply chain and cost pressures. Parts supply is insufficient in some parts of Southeast Asia, relying on cross-border supply chains, which increases costs and uncertainty; in addition, inadequate infrastructure such as electricity and transportation in many parts of Southeast Asia also constrains the layout and development of Chinese enterprises. Moreover, there is a shortage of senior management and technical talent locally, and labor productivity is relatively low, so enterprises need to rely on expatriate personnel, increasing operating costs.

Chinese construction machinery enterprises going global into Southeast Asia face challenges in multiple aspects, including brand image, sales channels, market competition, supply chain support, policy environment, and technological upgrading. Enterprises need to consolidate and expand their market share in Southeast Asia through measures such as enhancing brand influence, optimizing sales channels, improving after-sales service, strengthening localized operations, responding to international competition, and accelerating technological innovation.
