Recently, the first trial operation of the core ecological protection facility of the Kaihua Reservoir—the "fishway + fish lift + proliferation and release station" integrated three-in-one fish lifting system—built by Sinohydro Bureau 12 Co., Ltd., was successfully completed. As the first batch of fish successfully reached the upstream spawning waters via the fish lift, this marks a key step forward for the Kaihua Reservoir project in the coordinated development of ecological protection and water conservancy construction.

The Kaihua Reservoir dam site is located around Gaoling Village in the middle and upper reaches of the Majin River. The basin is rich in water resources and diverse in ecological types, nurturing abundant aquatic biological resources. As the core vehicle of the project's innovative ecological protection model, the "three-in-one" fish lifting system tested this time is the first of its kind among similar water conservancy projects in Zhejiang Province. During the trial operation, the technical team precisely regulated key parameters such as water flow velocity and water temperature, effectively guiding target fish groups to swim upstream and successfully cross the barrier of the reservoir dam, thereby achieving a through-migration channel.

To systematically open up fish migration channels, the Kaihua Reservoir project implemented a combined ecological governance measure of "one reduction and one increase." In the Qixi tributary in the upper reaches of the basin, several old weirs with gradually weakening functions were specifically demolished to completely eliminate the ecological barriers left over from history; in the main and tributary streams of the Majin River in the lower reaches, more than 20 weirs and hydropower stations with significant ecological impacts were renovated, with supporting construction of diverse fishway facilities such as ramp-type, boardwalk-type, and box culvert-type structures. These measures not only effectively safeguard the ecological needs of natural fish reproduction in the basin, but also significantly enhance the overall connectivity of the Majin River basin ecosystem, laying a solid foundation for basin-wide ecological regulation after the reservoir is put into operation.

At present, the Kaihua Reservoir is making every effort to advance various construction tasks in the project's final stage. Once the project is officially put into operation, this water conservancy hub, which also functions as a "super water tank," will shoulder the important responsibilities of flood control and safety protection in the source basin of the Qiantang River and urban and rural water supply security in western Zhejiang, providing solid water conservancy support for the high-quality development of the basin.
