True craftsmanship is revealed in the finest details
Livability renewal knows no bounds
From the rainbow walkway soaring across the river
To the age-friendly upgraded bus stops
Tunnel Engineering uses "renewal" to empower "people's livelihood"
"Embroidering" a new picture of livability
Once, a river creek separated the two banks, and a daily detour of 1.5 kilometers was the norm; a small step at a bus stop could become a "minor annoyance" for elders on the move. Today, these subtle upgrades are quietly taking shape in the hands of Tunnel people—a new "rainbow walkway" has been added over the Suzhou Creek, bus stops in Huangpu District have received "age-friendly upgrades," and Tunnel Engineering, stitch by stitch through urban renewal, is "embroidering" a more livable, more convenient, and more friendly urban space. Recently, a number of urban renewal projects designed and constructed by Tunnel Engineering—including the pilot project for new-type bus stops and colored paving of non-motorized vehicle lanes in Huangpu District, and the Baihe Bridge over the Suzhou Creek—have been successfully completed. Through refined urban renewal, Tunnel people are smoothing out the tiny "wrinkles" in citizens' daily travel and helping Shanghai paint a warmer picture of life. Care in Every Inch Bus Stops Achieve "Age-Friendly Upgrades" Since the beginning of this year, many citizens have noticed that the bus stops around them are becoming more thoughtful: gentler steps, more stable tactile paving, clearer signage in waiting areas... Behind these "quiet improvements" lies a "craftsmanship答卷" from Tunnel Engineering. Recently, the pilot project for new-type bus stops and colored paving of non-motorized vehicle lanes in Huangpu District, designed by Tunnel Engineering Urban Construction Design Group, was completed. The project uses the road quality improvement works at the Xizang South Road/Xietu Road bus stop and the Xizang South Road/Lujiabang Road bus stop in Huangpu District as pilots, and through renewal of road materials, improvement of construction techniques, optimization of traffic organization, and refinement of management measures, further strengthens the age-friendly and convenient service functions of bus stops, taking multiple measures to enhance the quality of urban road facilities. · Heavy-duty asphalt "smooths out" small wrinkles in the pavement Pavement damage in the boarding and alighting areas of bus stops often leaves elderly people with limited mobility feeling helpless and frustrated. In this renewal construction, Tunnel Engineering Urban Construction Design Group and Shanghai Road & Bridge worked together to innovatively use heavy-duty asphalt mixture at bus start-stop positions, greatly improving the pavement's shear resistance, wear resistance, and load-bearing performance, solving the problem of rutting and damage that easily occurs at bus stopping positions, "smoothing out" the tiny wrinkles in the pavement, and creating a safer and more comfortable travel environment for citizens. · Colored paving optimizes traffic "visual signage" The project team conducted an in-depth analysis of the travel habits of elderly passengers and the special needs of visually impaired people. Through colored paving markings optimization, rational layout, and streamline design, they provide clear visual guidance for bus passengers, standardize vehicle stopping order, delineate the boundaries of stopping areas, strengthen bus priority right-of-way, reduce pedestrian-non-motorized traffic conflicts, and further enhance traffic safety around the stops. · Polymer specialty materials make tactile paving more friendly In the bus stop renewal, Tunnel people also used polymers to reinforce the tactile paving, solving the problems of traditional tactile paving bricks easily lifting and being damaged. At the same time, targeting issues such as "redundant steps up and down" at bus stops, they made travel more convenient for people with disabilities by eliminating step obstacles, adding crossing-area signage, and leveling the road connections at the stops. Beyond engineering practice, Tunnel Engineering Urban Construction Design Group has also focused on elevating the "industry standards" for bus stop construction, leading the compilation of China's first "Guiding Opinions on Age-Friendly Bus Stops (Trial)," which comprehensively guides the age-friendly renovation of bus stops in Shanghai. The Guiding Opinions focus on the pain points and quality needs of elderly passengers using bus stops, and based on the principles of "people-oriented, demand-driven, safe and convenient, and adapted to local conditions," propose age-friendly construction content for bay-type and roadside bus stops across the city from five major aspects: height difference connections, signs and markings, waiting environment, traffic coordination, and auxiliary facilities, injecting warmth into urban transportation. Up to now, under the guidance of the Guiding Opinions, Shanghai has completed age-friendly renovations of more than 370 bus stops, greatly improving the convenience of bus travel for elderly and disabled passengers. Vitality Reborn Another "Rainbow Walkway" Added over the Suzhou Creek This month, the Baihe Bridge over the Suzhou Creek, constructed by Tunnel Engineering Urban Environment, has been fully completed and is about to fully open. This bridge is like a "rainbow walkway" over the Suzhou Creek, connecting the Tian'an 1000 Trees cultural and commercial complex in Putuo to the west and the Shanghai Railway Station area in Jing'an to the east, completely ending the history of riverside residents "having to detour basically to cross the river." Viewed from above, the main body of the Baihe Bridge is laid out in the shape of the Chinese character "人" (person), cleverly forming the character "合" (together) with surrounding greenery and ancillary facilities—echoing the meaning of "integration" while using actual functions to promote resource linkage across the two banks. Previously, citizens on both banks of this section of the Suzhou Creek had to detour more than 1.5 kilometers to travel back and forth; after the bridge was completed, this spatial barrier was completely broken. At the same time, it has built a "fast lane" for economic linkage—the core commercial district of Jing'an on the east bank and the M50 creative park and Tian'an 1000 Trees on the west bank can now be seamlessly connected, injecting new momentum into regional industrial synergy and commercial vitality. As an important component of the "slow-traffic system" on both banks of the Suzhou Creek in Shanghai, the Baihe Bridge seamlessly connects with riverside walkways and cycling greenways. Citizens can stroll, cycle, and enjoy the scenery along the river, experiencing the Suzhou Creek charm of "a new view with every step." The project will truly connect the "15-minute community life circle," allowing the ecological landscape and livelihood services on both banks of the river to "connect into patches and weave into a network."
