On August 29, 2025, the Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering Team of Southwest Jiaotong University held a doctoral dissertation defense in Room 216 of the Geotechnical Center on the Jiuli Campus.

The doctoral students participating in this defense were Xiao Yao and Peter Antwi Buah.

The doctoral dissertation defense committee consisted of six experts from within and outside the university. Among them, the defense chair for Xiao Yao was Professor Zhao Lianheng of Central South University, and the defense chair for Peter Antwi Buah was Researcher Zheng Lu of Fuzhou University. The committee members included Professor Yang Wenbo of Southwest Jiaotong University, Associate Professor Yang Shangchuan of Southwest Jiaotong University, and Researcher Yang Changwei of Southwest Jiaotong University. The defense secretary was Postdoctoral Fellow Guo Yukun of Southwest Jiaotong University.

First, the candidate Xiao Yao presented a report on his dissertation work titled "Research on the Dynamic Disaster Mechanism of High and Steep Slopes Under Near-Fault Ground Motions." Focusing on the dynamic disaster mechanism of near-fault high and steep slopes, the dissertation adopted research methods such as theoretical analysis, data statistics, model testingand numerical simulation to study the characteristics of near-fault ground motions and their influence on the dynamic response patterns of high and steep slopes, and established slope fragility curves that account for the pulse characteristics of ground motions. This is of great value for deepening the understanding of the disaster-causing mechanisms of geological hazards in strong earthquake areas and improving the seismic risk assessment level of major projects.

The candidate Peter Antwi Buah presented a report on his dissertation work titled "Rock Slope Stability Analysis Under Pulse-like Ground Motions: Methods and Applications." Addressing the seismic stability of rock slopes under pulse-like ground motions, the dissertation adopted research methods such as theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and shaking table tests to systematically analyze the dynamic response characteristics of slopes under pulse-like ground motions, and further proposed a new framework for landslide susceptibility assessment applicable to pulse-like ground motion scenarios, which has important theoretical significance and engineering application value.

After completing their dissertation work reports, the two doctoral students successively went through the procedures of questions from the defense committee, responses from the candidates, and voting and deliberation by the committee. Finally, the defense committee unanimously agreed that the two students passed the doctoral dissertation defense and recommended that they be awarded doctoral degrees. We wish them continued progress in their future career paths and even more outstanding achievements and contributions.
