On September 5 local time, the underwater installation of four subsea sonar systems for the Saudi King Salman Port Project undertaken by SEPCO (Shandong Electric Power Construction Corporation) was completed with high quality.
According to the design requirements, the project's sonar system consists of one command workstation and four sonar processors, enabling all-round monitoring of the waters adjacent to the project while providing important underwater navigation and safety guarantees for vessel operations. In view of the complex underwater construction procedures and high safety and technical standards, the project department organized the work scientifically, continuously strengthened control over the construction process, and implemented all requirements to high standards.
Since offshore operations officially began on August 3, the project team spent 34 days completing the laying of 1,500 meters of subsea cable and the installation of four high-precision subsea sonar probes. Among these, to ensure the long-term safety of key routes, the project department also installed cast-iron protective casings on 1,000 meters of subsea cable. During the installation of Sonar Probe No. 2, the actual water depth at the preset location far exceeded expectations and was close to the main navigation channel, posing potential risks to equipment safety, vessel navigation, and functional effectiveness. Faced with this challenge, the project team, together with the design institute, suppliers, manufacturers, and the construction team, held multiple technical coordination meetings and determined the optimal coordinate position. As construction took place during the high-temperature season, to obtain first-hand data, project technical personnel conducted multiple scientific and meticulous hydrological surveys and seabed scans of candidate locations, ensuring the scientific layout and functionality of the sonar array and creating favorable conditions for the smooth installation of the system.
The Saudi King Salman Port Project is an important part of Saudi Arabia's "Vision 2030" and is mainly engaged in the manufacturing, maintenance, and repair of ships and drilling platforms, as well as the overhaul and construction of supertankers. The project not only features the world's largest ship lift system, the longest quay, and world-leading combined lifting capacity, but also, with its massive scale, advanced facilities, and strong production capacity, has become the world's largest "super shipyard." As of now, the project's EPC progress has reached 98.63%.
