Recently, the Kigali Mazzi informal settlement comprehensive municipal upgrading project in Rwanda undertaken by PowerChina Municipal Company passed completion acceptance and obtained a handover certificate jointly issued by the owner and the supervising engineer.
The project is located in the most densely populated informal settlement in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. The scope of works covers municipal infrastructure including roads, street lighting, water supply networks and sidewalks, along with the simultaneous construction of public facilities such as government office buildings, a farmers' market, schools and a football pitch.
Faced with difficulties including narrow existing alleys, dense pedestrian and vehicular traffic, chaotic underground utilities, and the great challenge of construction organization and traffic diversion in the area, the project team innovatively adopted a "phased off-peak" approach, rationally dividing work units and avoiding residents' travel peak hours to minimize mutual interference between construction and community life. At the same time, by establishing a community liaison mechanism, the team strengthened communication with residents and responded promptly to their requests, effectively ensuring the smooth progress of the project and accumulating valuable experience for implementing infrastructure projects in high-density urban areas.
Upon completion, the area has undergone remarkable changes, and the living environment of tens of thousands of residents has been improved. Among these, the Mpazi Farmers' Market, with its smooth rooflines, scientifically designed natural ventilation and daylighting, and perforated exterior wall patterns featuring local cultural characteristics, has become a widely recognized new landmark that not only serves residents' daily needs but also attracts many tourists. The successful delivery of the project has further enhanced the company's brand influence and visibility, injecting strong momentum into the company's efforts to deepen its presence in the Rwandan market.
