At the Shanghai Science and Technology Awards Conference held on the morning of August 26, the 2024 Shanghai Science and Technology Awards were officially announced, with a total of 206 awards (recipients) conferred. The College of Civil Engineering at Tongji Universitythe Department of Geotechnical Engineering has won 9 awards, including 4 Natural Science Awards, 1 Technological Invention Award, and 4 Science and Technology Progress Awardswhich fully reflects the Department's comprehensive strength and innovation level in basic research, key technology development, and engineering application.
Natural Science Awards (4) Four Natural Science Awards were received, including 1 First Prize, for "Three-Dimensional Crack Propagation Mechanisms and Multi-Scale Failure Mechanics of Underground Structures under Multi-Field Coupling" led by Professor Zhuang Xiaoying, and 3 Second Prizes, respectively for "Quantitative Characterization of Uncertain Underground Environments and Their Catastrophe Assessment Theory" led by Professor Zhang Dongming, "Evolution Mechanisms and Whole-Process Simulation of Landslide Dam Disaster Chains" led by Professor Peng Ming, and "Continuous-Discontinuous Catastrophe Mechanisms and Multi-Scale Characterization Methods for Rock Masses" led by Professor Yu Haitao. Technological Invention Award (1) One First Prize Technological Invention Award was received, for "Key Technologies for Fire Prevention and Control and Safe Low-Carbon Operation and Maintenance of Long Tunnels" led by Professor Yan Zhiguo. Science and Technology Progress Awards (4) Four Science and Technology Progress Awards were received, including 3 First Prizes, respectively for "Deterioration Mechanisms and Service Performance Enhancement Key Technologies of Vertical Cutoff Walls at Contaminated Sites" led by Professor Feng Shijin, "Key Technologies and Applications for Intelligent Construction and Risk Management of Urban Networked Deep Underground Engineering" led by Professor Xie Xiongyao, and "Key Technologies for Catastrophe Mechanisms and Disaster Resilience Enhancement of Rock Mass Engineering in Plateau Environments" led by Professor Zhao Cheng, and 1 Second Prize for "Key Technologies and Applications for Intelligent Control of Construction Deformation in Urban Underground Engineering Based on Digital Platforms" led by Professor Mu Linlong.

These awards demonstrate the Department of Geotechnical Engineering's commitment to the "Four Orientations" and, building on its deep accumulation in three disciplinary directions—tunnel and underground construction engineering, geotechnical engineering, and geological resources and geological engineering—its continuous exploration and solid progress in scientific and technological innovation. As an important base in China's geotechnical and geological engineering fields, the Department has always centered on major national strategic needs, focused on key scientific and technological issues in infrastructure construction under complex geological conditions, and adhered to the close integration of theoretical research, experimental R&D, and engineering practice, contributing significant strength to the implementation of national strategies and the building of Shanghai as a science and innovation center. Looking to the future, the Department will continue to deepen organized research, strengthen original and leading scientific and technological breakthroughs, and provide solid support for expanding the nation's strategic scientific and technological strength and achieving high-level scientific and technological self-reliance and self-strengthening.
