On August 20, the concrete pouring of the last diaphragm wall panel of the Meilianghu West Working Shaft in the Civil Engineering Section 09 of the Wuxi-Yixing Intercity Rail Transit Project was completed, marking the official completion of the retaining structure construction for the first working shaft of the large shield tunneling section of the S2 Line.

Project Overview

The Meilianghu West Working Shaft is the shield launching shaft for Section 09 of the Wuxi-Yixing S2 Line. Located at the intersection of Xiaguang Road and Wanjing South Road and arranged east-west along Xiaguang Road, it is a three-story underground reinforced concrete frame structure.

The project involves a total of 64 diaphragm wall panels, with depths of 52–53.6 m and a thickness of 1.2 m, using H-shaped steel joints.

TripleOverlapping Challenges

Complex geological conditions constrain construction

The construction area has a well-developed surrounding water system, complex and variable geological conditions, and poor geological structural stability, posing great difficulties for precision control in trenching construction and equipment operation safety.

High safety control requirements

Affected by the complex geology, processes from trenching to subsequent welding are closely interlinked, with many operational risk points. How to ensure that workers strictly comply with safety procedures and achieve standardized linkage of all processes is the core difficulty of safety management during construction.

Proximity to residential areas increases coordination difficulty

The construction area is close to residential areas, and factors such as noise and dust generated by construction directly affect the daily lives of nearby residents. How to balance project progress with residents' peace and quiet and reduce the impact of construction on the public has become a livelihood issue that must be properly handled in advancing the project.

Three MajorHighlights Breaking Through

The project team faced multiple challenges head-on and effectively resolved various difficulties through systematic planning and targeted measures.

Strict control to build a solid safety defense line

The self-managed team management system was strictly implemented to ensure that every worker is proficient in safety operating procedures. Processes were carefully organized, construction schedules reasonably arranged, and a 24-hour duty and watch system implemented. On-site patrol frequency and intensity were strengthened to promptly identify and eliminate safety hazards, providing all-round protection for construction safety.

Targeted measures to refine process control

Experts from multiple fields were organized for in-depth demonstration, and detailed construction plans and emergency response plans were formulated based on actual conditions. At key construction stages, project management personnel personally operated on site to precisely control trench verticality and slurry quality. Materials were strictly tested to ensure compliance with standards; welding processes were strictly controlled with the first-piece system implemented; and weld inspections were strictly carried out to guarantee construction quality and progress.

Livelihood first to build a harmonious construction environment

Active efforts were made to communicate with surrounding residents, explaining construction plans and noise-reduction and dust-prevention measures in detail and responding promptly to residents' concerns. Operating hours were strictly enforced, with strong-noise construction prohibited at night; spray systems and noise monitors were installed at the construction fencing, with monitoring data publicly displayed in real time; and transport vehicles were required to wash their tires when entering and leaving the site, effectively preventing dust from polluting roads and minimizing disturbance to residents' lives.
