Recently, the Lufeng City all-vanadium flow battery energy storage project, Yunnan's first large-scale grid-side long-duration all-vanadium flow battery energy storage demonstration project and one in which Jiangxi Electric Power Design Institute (Jiangxi Institute) participated as a co-builder, was successfully connected to the grid and put into operation. This marks a milestone breakthrough for Jiangxi Institute in the engineering application of new energy storage technologies.

This project is a key grid-side shared energy storage project in Yunnan Province and has been included in the 2025 Provincial Major Project List and the "Top Priority" Project List of Yunnan Province. It is of great significance for optimizing the regional energy structure and enhancing the capacity to absorb new energy. The project is located at Heiniqiao in the Jinshan area of Lufeng City, Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, covers an area of 53.09 mu, involves a total investment of more than one billion yuan, has a construction scale of up to 100 MW/400 MWh, and is designed for an operating period of 25 years.

The design team of Jiangxi Institute went deep into the site and overcame complex terrain and technical requirements to carefully design a complete system solution including energy storage battery compartments, PCS booster compartments, and a 220 kV booster station. By optimizing system efficiency and operating strategy design, the project's full life-cycle cost was significantly reduced, and the design scheme supports the system in achieving more than ten thousand charge-discharge cycles with a service life of up to 25 years. The design scheme gives full play to the inherent advantage of all-vanadium flow batteries being non-flammable and non-explosive, building a multi-layered safety assurance system across multiple dimensions such as system layout, fire protection design, and emergency access, thereby laying a solid foundation for the long-term safe and stable operation of the power station. At the same time, environmental protection concepts are integrated into design details. Leveraging the low-emission advantage of all-vanadium flow technology itself, the design fully considers efficient recovery pathways for the electrolyte, achieving resource recycling and sustainable development.

The successful grid connection and commissioning of the Lufeng City all-vanadium flow battery energy storage project will significantly enhance the regulation capacity of the power grid in central Yunnan, providing strong "time + space" dual regulation capability for the booming photovoltaic and wind power in the region: First, it optimizes consumption by using the peak-shaving and valley-filling function of energy storage to enhance the local consumption capacity of the eastern Chuxiong power grid, with surplus electricity sent to the main Yunnan grid for balanced dispatch. Second, it significantly strengthens the peak-shaving and frequency-regulation capability of the power grid, improving the stability and reliability of the regional power grid.

From the land of Ganpo to the peaks of Yunling, Jiangxi Institute will continue to deepen technological innovation and contribute indispensable "Jiangxi Institute strength" to building a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient new energy system, lighting up green momentum.
