Recently, Professor Luo Yanbin of the School of Highway Engineering at Chang'an University was approved for a National Natural Science Foundation of China Young Scientists Fund project (Category A). The related project closely addresses core issues in the construction, operation and maintenance of major national engineering projects and disaster prevention and control, marking important progress by the School of Highway Engineering at Chang'an University in the highway field.
Professor Luo Yanbin's team has taken root in western China, targeting the construction and maintenance challenges of tunnels in loess, large-span, and cold-region conditions, breaking through scientific challenges concerning disaster-causing mechanisms and disaster prevention and control under coupled geological, structural, and environmental effects. The team revealed the deformation and instability evolution mechanisms of loess tunnels and established a rigid support theory for deformation and instability prevention and control; deciphered the mechanisms affecting the stability of large-span highway tunnels and innovated the design theories and methods for support structures; and identified the formation mechanisms of frost damage in cold-region tunnels, pioneering a seepage-temperature coupled collaborative anti-freezing technology system. The relevant theories, methods, and technical systems have been successfully applied to 367 highway tunnel projects across all provinces with loess and cold-region conditions. The new project will focus on the disaster-causing mechanisms and prevention and control of highway tunnels in western China under extreme climates, providing core scientific and technological support for enhancing the resilience of transportation infrastructure in the western road network. The approval of the Young Scientists Fund project demonstrates Chang'an University's profound foundation and forward-looking vision in the field of highway engineering, and is an important achievement of the university's organized scientific research. The School of Highway Engineering at Chang'an University will continue to leverage its disciplinary advantages in highway engineering, safeguarding the peace and stability of the land through scientific and technological innovation, and forging a solid scientific and technological backing for western development and major national engineering construction.
