On May 20, 2025, the Institute of Extreme Environment Construction, led by the College of Civil Engineering of Tongji University, was officially unveiled and established. The institute will focus on scientific research and technological breakthroughs in construction in the "three environments" of high/deep underground, polar, and extraterrestrial regions.Recently, the Space Engineering Branch of the China Civil Engineering Society issued an invitation, welcoming Tongji University students to register as members, to jointly focus on the frontiers of disciplinary development and major national strategic needs, and to explore the research and application frontiers of "extraterrestrial engineering construction"!

About the China Civil Engineering Society
The China Civil Engineering Society was founded in 1912 and is an academic social organization of civil engineering science and technology workers nationwide, under the supervision of the China Association for Science and Technology. The society has joined seven international academic organizations: the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA),the International Federation for Structural Concrete(Fib), the International Gas Union (IGU), the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), and the Associated Research Centers for the Urban Underground Space (ACUUS); it has signed bilateral cooperation agreements with academic organizations in more than ten countries and regions. Institute of Extreme Environment Construction, Tongji University On May 20, 2025, Tongji University held the Conference on the Development of AI-Empowered Disciplinary Innovation, at which the Institute of Extreme Environment Construction, led by our college, was unveiled and established. The institute will take construction in the "three environments" of high/deep underground, polar, and extraterrestrial regions as its guide, tackle core scientific challenges such as site selection and planning, in-situ utilization of metamaterials, metastructure design, unmanned construction, and prevention and control of extreme disasters under extreme natural and information environments including extreme temperature/wind/pressure/acceleration/magnetism, support major national projects such as the Sichuan-Tibet Railway, Antarctic research stations, and lunar bases, lead international scientific research on extreme environment construction, and provide solid support for underpinning national strategy and advancing industrial upgrading.
