The civil engineering discipline of Tongji University was founded in 1914, and its overall strength ranks among the top in China. In the successive discipline rankings published by the Ministry of Education, the overall level of Tongji University's civil engineering discipline has continuously ranked first or A+ in China. In 2011, the College of Civil Engineering of Tongji University was selected as one of the 17 pilot colleges of the Ministry of Education, the only national pilot college in the field of civil engineering. In 2015, the civil engineering discipline was among the first batch selected for the Class I Peak Discipline of the Shanghai Universities Peak and Plateau Discipline Construction Plan, and in 2017 and 2022 it was twice selected for the national "Double First-Class" construction discipline list. In 2019 it was selected as one of the first batch of national first-class undergraduate major construction sites. Since 2017, in the ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, Tongji Civil Engineering has continuously ranked No. 1 in the world; since 2020, in the US News World University Subject Rankings, Tongji Civil Engineering has continuously ranked No. 1 in the world.

Legal education at Tongji University has a long history; as early as 1915, the first cohort of law students graduated. The Tongji University Law School was established in 1945 and houses research institutions such as the Sino-German Institute of International Economic Law, the Center for German Law and EU Law Studies, and the Sino-Italian Judicial Research Center, and possesses the national first batch "Applied and Interdisciplinary Outstanding Legal Talent Education and Training Base," the "Shanghai Outstanding Legal Talent Training Base," the "Shanghai Collaborative Innovation Center for AI Social Governance," the "Shanghai Law Society Investment and Construction Rule of Law Research Association," the "Shanghai Foreign-Related Outstanding Legal Talent Training Base," and the "Undergraduate Teaching Project" off-campus practical education base for university students. The Civil Engineering-Law Dual Degree Program has built a multi-level, all-round international exchange model covering both undergraduate and graduate levels, combining long-term and short-term arrangements with flexible mechanisms, comprehensively enhancing students' international perspective and innovative ability. The Civil Engineering-Law Dual Degree Program deeply integrates the civil engineering discipline with law, establishing a curriculum system that "balances civil engineering and law, integrates courses, cultivates the humanities, and provides interdisciplinary training." It emphasizes the streamlining, optimization, and deep integration of core courses, and offers integrated courses such as Legal Practice in Construction Engineering Dispute Resolution, Construction Engineering Regulations, Engineering Forensics, and Artificial Intelligence Ethics; it focuses on AI-empowered discipline construction, relying on the Principles of Civil Information Engineering course to deeply integrate information technology with civil engineering and cultivate future-oriented informatization talents; it emphasizes a school-enterprise integrated training model, jointly establishing diverse practical teaching bases with numerous judicial institutions and enterprises to cultivate practical talents who meet enterprise needs.

Based on entirely new discipline optimization and interdisciplinary integration, the Civil Engineering-Law Dual Bachelor's Degree Program has formed a flexible and broad employment scope and soundly developing personal prospects.
