On July 28, the main bridge of the Yellow River Grand Bridge on the Lankao-Yuanwu Expressway, constructed by the Municipal Group of Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd. (Tunnel Holdings), was successfully closed one month ahead of schedule. This "water dragon" now stands over the Yellow River in a new posture, marking decisive progress in the project's construction.

The Lankao-Fengqiu section of the Lanyuan Expressway is 30.263 km long, built to a two-way, six-lane expressway standard with a design speed of 120 km/h. The Yellow River Grand Bridge is 9,104 m long in total; its main bridge is a 140+360+360+140 m steel-concrete composite girder three-tower cable-stayed bridge, with a tripod-style pylon whose central tower is 160.5 m high and side towers are 154.3 m high, while the auxiliary bridge's 20 spans of 100 m steel-concrete composite girders represent the largest scale of their kind in China.

Closed One Month Early! Henan's Lanyuan Expressway Yellow River Grand Bridge Sets Multiple Domestic Technical Breakthroughs

From pile foundations rooted in the Yellow River bed
To the 100-meter steel girders spanning the river This bridge harbors quite a few "black technologies" Overcoming the Yellow River's complex geology Innovatively creating a pile foundation "muscle-building tool" The Yellow River's geology is complex, with abundant fine silty sand. Driving a tripod-style pylon central tower with a hundred-meter tower height into the Yellow River bed is like "sticking chopsticks into sand," and ensuring pile foundation stability is a huge challenge. Faced with 3-meter super-large-diameter, 106-meter ultra-deep bored cast-in-place piles and pain points such as easy hole collapse and difficult hole cleaning, the project team of the Municipal Group of Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd. used specially formulated PHP mud to "protect the hole," paired with hydrocyclones, sand separators and other "hole-cleaning wonders," strictly controlling the sand content of the mud to within 0.2% in a single cleaning pass to ensure pile quality meets standards. Among them, the 3-meter super-large-diameter piles of the auxiliary bridge adopted "distributed pile-tip and pile-side post-grouting" technology, automated equipment and an intelligent control system, with grouting volume, pressure and other data uploaded in real time for remote monitoring, directly increasing pile bearing capacity by about 20%—truly a "muscle-building tool" for pile foundations. Massive pile caps fear "fever" Intelligent "temperature control system" for precise temperature regulation The Yellow River Bridge's pile caps are mass concrete caps with a total pour volume of 8,067.9 cubic meters, poured in two layers, with a large single-pour volume. To reduce hydration heat, the traditional method is to install internal cooling pipes, but this often fails to adjust cooling water flow in time according to internal temperature changes, causing excessive temperature differences between inside and outside and thus cracks. Such a massive pour posed a considerable "temperature control challenge" to the project team. In response, the project team of the Municipal Group of Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd. reduced hydration heat by optimizing the concrete mix design and other means, lowering total heat release and peak temperature to prevent temperature rise in mass concrete; at the same time, it independently developed an intelligent temperature control system, arranging four layers of cooling pipes along the concrete thickness direction and, based on measurement and remote automatic control technology, using variable-frequency pumps to control in real time the cooling water flow in the concrete cooling circuits, achieving precise regulation of the core temperature and inside-outside temperature difference of the pile cap concrete and ensuring the construction quality of the mass concrete pile caps. Creating an adjustable cross-brace "tower-stabilizing tool" Ensuring the 160-meter inclined bridge pylon does not "go off course" The main bridge pylon of the Yellow River Bridge is 160.5 m high; the central and upper pylon columns are cantilevered bare towers with large cross-section variations, requiring precise control of stress and alignment during construction. The Municipal Group of Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd., together with Tongji University and other units, carried out optimized design of adjustable active cross-braces and established a disturbance-state evaluation and risk prediction system integrating numerical simulation with monitoring data, actively adjusting brace forces based on monitoring data to effectively offset inward displacement and stress of the pylon columns and improve safety during construction. The project team also used spatial morphology data, UAV point clouds and continuous stress monitoring technology to complete spatial deformation monitoring and 3D model reconstruction of the bridge pylon, enabling cloud-based visualization of the pylon's structural performance and forming a refined, scientific and efficient system for state assessment and risk warning during pylon construction. Full-span erection of 100-meter steel girders Setting a domestic record The auxiliary bridge's 20 spans of 100-meter steel-concrete composite girders represent the largest scale of their kind in China. To reduce impact on the Yellow River floodplain ecology, the Municipal Group of Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd. abandoned the traditional scheme and innovatively used a super-large launching gantry to erect 100-meter steel girders full-span, combined with a 1,470-ton reverse-lifting process, achieving a major breakthrough in the integral installation and construction technology of 100-meter-span prefabricated steel-concrete composite girders. This process not only reduces steel consumption but also increases the compressive stress reserve of the concrete deck slabs, reducing cracking risk and improving structural durability. In addition, the project team developed an intelligent monitoring system to record key data throughout girder manufacturing and erection, optimizing the construction process and ensuring safe and efficient erection; it also worked with Zhengzhou University to applyacoustic emission testingtechnology to identify and locate damage in the launching gantry's main girders and key components, enabling safety assessment of the launching gantry. Doing "subtraction" on welding of deck slab wet-joint connections Saving more than 30 days of construction time To address the large welding volume and difficult quality control of more than 500,000 joint welds in the wet joints of precast concrete deck slabs on the main bridge, auxiliary bridge and east approach embankment bridge, the Municipal Group of Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd., together with the design unit and Tongji University, introduced a welding-free scheme that reduced welding volume by more than 65%. This innovation not only lowered labor intensity for construction workers but also shortened welding time by 2 days per installation segment, significantly improved welding quality, and cumulatively shortened the construction period by more than 30 days by the time of closure.

At present, the project has started trial construction of the lower asphalt surface course and entered the sprint stage toward full opening to traffic. As a key project of Henan Province's expressway "13445 Project," the Lankao-Fengqiu section of the Lanyuan Expressway, once completed, will form an east-west artery parallel to the Lianhuo Expressway, of great significance for serving the strategy of the rise of Central China, boosting the development of the Central Plains urban agglomeration and promoting high-quality development of the Yellow River basin.
