On July 27, the first wind turbine of the world's highest-altitude wind farm—the Tibet Huadian Shannan Qiongjie 60 MW Wind Power Project, constructed by PowerChina Kunming Engineering Corporation—was successfully hoisted into place!

With the embedding of the last blade of Unit 12 into the hub, the first unit of the world's highest-altitude wind farm under construction has completed hoisting. The project is located in Qiongjie County, Shannan City, Tibet Autonomous Region, at an average altitude of 5,228 meters, with the highest turbine site at 5,370 meters. It installs 11 5 MW turbines and one 6.25 MW turbine and is scheduled to be commissioned by the end of October 2025. Once operational, it will generate an average of 163 million kWh of clean electricity annually, enough to meet the electricity needs of 120,000 households; this is equivalent to saving 45,500 tons of standard coal per year, or reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 128,700 tons annually.

As the world's highest-altitude wind power project under construction, the construction area has an oxygen content of only 57% of that in plain areas, a day-night temperature difference exceeding 20 degrees, and wind forces reaching above level 9 at maximum. The on-site roads climb a total height of 1,670 meters, with a single transport trip taking 3.5 hours, making the transport and installation of large equipment extremely difficult. The Kunming Engineering Corporation project team overcame numerous severe challenges and adopted a large-equipment combination scheme of "segmented hoisting, modular transport, and precise coordination," applying the single-blade hoisting method at an altitude of 5,300 meters for the first time. Compared with whole-rotor hoisting, this saves about 66% of the site area and raises the upper limit of effective working wind speed to 10 m/s, extending the precious construction window and greatly improving construction adaptability and efficiency. It demonstrated unique management capabilities and technical advantages and won high praise from the project owner.

The completion of the first wind turbine hoisting marks major progress in the project's construction and has accumulated experience for wind power projects at ultra-high altitudes and with complex terrain. At the same time, it also means the project has officially entered the critical stage of equipment installation. The project team will continue to maintain its fine work style, ensure the project is commissioned safely, with high quality, and on schedule, and celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Tibet Autonomous Region with outstanding achievements!
