Introduction
The "Fifth Facade"refers to therooftop surfaceof a building. The urban fifth facade includes urban landscape elements such as building rooftops, windows (balconies), air-conditioning unit spaces, and elevated corridors. Methods for enhancing the fifth facade include rooftop greening, rooftop commerce, rooftop photovoltaics, and the low-altitude economy, which can be combined in various ways for integrated design. To this end, the Guangzhou Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Bureau issued the "Guiding Opinions on Enhancing the Quality of the Urban Fifth Facade through Planning and Construction (Trial)" and the "Guangzhou Urban Fifth Facade Optimization Design Guidelines." Through two feature articles, we will start fromrooftop greening, rooftop commerce, rooftop sports fields, and rooftop photovoltaicsthese four core types, and combine planning and design key points, our institute's experience, and practical cases to provide interpretation and professional sharing on the innovative utilization and quality enhancement of the urban fifth facade.
III. Rooftop Sports Fields
With rapid urban development, public space is becoming increasingly scarce, especially in old urban districts where land is extremely precious. Ground-level space is valuable and sometimes cannot meet the public's demand for sports venues. Utilizing idle rooftop space on buildings and converting it into sports grounds with open views and fresh air can not only provide citizens with more sports options, but also add teaching resources and activity venues for schools and educational institutions, enrich students' extracurricular lives, and promote their all-round development. In addition to common running tracks, various ball sports courts can be set up, such as basketball, football, volleyball, tennis, badminton, and table tennis. The appropriate court configuration should be selected based on the actual rooftop area and structural load-bearing capacity. If conditions permit, a swimming pool can also be built, or extreme sports such as roller skating, skateboarding, and rock climbing can be offered.
1. From a single sports field to a rich activity space
Ball sports courts must be surrounded by enclosed fencing (netting) on all four sides; if conditions permit, five-sided enclosure (i.e., with the top also enclosed) is recommended. The height of the fencing (netting), mesh size, and column dimensions and spacing must comply with relevant technical standards, and should be comprehensively considered in conjunction with factors such as wind force and roof height. Sports equipment placed for long periods should be fixed in place to prevent it from being blown down during typhoons and causing safety hazards. If a rooftop swimming pool is built, waterproofing must be properly handled; if the sports area is located above classrooms, effective sound insulation and vibration prevention measures must be taken to avoid affecting normal teaching. In addition to the sports areas, auxiliary rooms and the overall rooftop environment must be rationally designed, with scientific zoning to ensure the long-term operation of the rooftop sports field. For example, auxiliary rooms such as changing rooms, shower rooms, restrooms, equipment rooms, spectator stands, and lounges should be built according to actual needs, while rooftop equipment should be centrally arranged and screened with grilles or vertical greening. Guangzhou Infinitus Plaza Infinitus Plaza has rubber running tracks and hard-paved surfaces laid on the rooftop and in the gray spaces outside the office areas, connecting the office entrances and exits with the rooftop landscape platform, providing park users with excellent views and aerobic exercise venues. It links the city and natural scenery, creating an office space that combines sustainability with Lingnan characteristics. Guangzhou Infinitus Plaza Image source: Infinitus official website

Guangzhou Xingguangming Sports and Cultural Park Centered on the concept of a "sports and cultural park + internet-famous check-in destination," the rooftop of Xingguangming Sports and Cultural Park creates an open Lingnan youth education and leisure space integrating recreational sports, art, science and technology education, and internet-famous check-in spots. It realizes "education, sports, and leisure entertainment right at the doorstep," providing a comprehensive leisure and entertainment platform for young people, sports enthusiasts, and tourists. IV. Rooftop Photovoltaics
Rooftop photovoltaics can be divided intotwo major categoriesone is building-integrated photovoltaics, such as photovoltaic curtain walls, photovoltaic glass, and photovoltaic tiles, which directly serve as part of the building facade and are suitable for new buildings; the other is photovoltaic power generation systems, which are attached separately to buildings, including photovoltaic thin films, monocrystalline silicon, and polycrystalline silicon solar panels. Rooftop photovoltaic panel installation generally belongs to the latter.
1. Using "new technology" to create "green roofs"
First, the roof must undergo a "checkup" to confirm that its load-bearing and waterproofing performance meet installation requirements. Second, lighting and orientation conditions must be considered. In the Northern Hemisphere, south-facing roofs have the highest power generation efficiency, while east- and west-facing roofs generate about 20% less electricity. If the roof faces north or is shaded by large trees, tall buildings, or other obstructions, power generation will be affected. In addition, lightning protection grounding wires must be installed during installation, heat dissipation gaps must be reserved between the photovoltaic panels and the roof, and regular line inspections and photovoltaic panel cleaning and maintenance must be carried out. Converting solar energy into electricity through rooftop photovoltaics can be used for household power supply and energy storage, which is both environmentally friendly and saves on electricity bills; at the same time, photovoltaic panels can provide shading and heat insulation for the roof, better adapting to the climate conditions of the Lingnan region. New Guangzhou Art Museum The new Guangzhou Art Museum is the world's first public building with photovoltaic technology on all five facades. Its exterior design is inspired by the "blooming kapok flower," and the curtain walls of its "petals" use solar photovoltaic glass, composed of photovoltaic modules in six colors; 21,008 fish-scale-shaped photovoltaic glass pieces were manually assembled. Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center The roof of the Baiyun International Convention Center is covered with about 40,000 square meters of high-efficiency monocrystalline photovoltaic modules, with an annual power generation of more than 4 million kWh, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 3,000 tons. This photovoltaic system not only provides green electricity for the Baiyun International Convention Center but also plays a positive role in energy conservation and emission reduction and in optimizing the power grid structure. As Guangdong's largest comprehensive convention center, this fully demonstrates the local adaptability of modern Lingnan architecture. Shenzhen Zhengxiang Energy House Shenzhen Zhengxiang Energy House is a project exploring future energy-saving renovation models, dedicated to creating a "zero-energy" residence that meets livable and comfortable needs. The project innovatively proposes a replicable modular renovation scheme: through an external solar panel shading system and a staggered three-dimensional layout, it not only ensures transparent indoor viewing sightlines but also forms heat dissipation channels for air circulation from top to bottom, achieving dual optimization of energy utilization and residential experience.
