With the successful first ignition of the all-new 16-cylinder engine platform, Chinese engine manufacturer Shanghai New Power Automotive Technology Co., Ltd. (SNAT, formerly Shanghai Diesel Engine Co., Ltd.) has taken another step forward on the basis of Liebherr's proven injection technology. Since 2019, the two parties have steadily advanced their cooperation, working together on the development of efficient derivative products, international collaboration, and continuous innovation in high-performance engine technology.
On the all-new 16-cylinder engine platform, SNAT once again adopts Liebherr's common rail injection technology. The successful first ignition is an important milestone in the joint development of a high-performance powertrain by both parties, and also demonstrates their firm confidence in continued cooperation at a high technical level.

A Systematic Technical Partnership
SNAT uses Liebherr components in its existing 6-cylinder (25K) and 12-cylinder (12VK) engine platforms. Both engine series are equipped with the LI2.9 high-performance diesel injector. Its flow rate is comparable to that of large engine systems, giving it a market-leading advantage in terms of system cost-performance. The results are evident: the 6-cylinder inline engine (25-liter displacement) delivers up to 960 kW, while the 12-cylinder V-type engine (57-liter displacement) reaches 2,185 kW, and both perform outstandingly in series applications.

The new 16VK engine platform powers generator sets to meet global energy demand
Liu Xinyan, Chief Engineer of SNAT Platforms, said:
"The excellent operating performance and high system stability of these two platforms were the decisive factors in our continued choice of Liebherr for the new-generation 16-cylinder engine."

In the common rail system, SNAT adopts Liebherr's LI2.9 injector technology, paired with a high-performance high-pressure pump
System Integration Capability at the Highest Level
The new platform combines a compact structure with extremely high power density—a point supported by Liebherr's precisely coordinated common rail system. Combined with the electronic control system, the system achieves precise fuel delivery through constant injection pressure, thereby improving combustion efficiency and significantly reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and engine noise. Multiple injections can be performed within each working cycle, further enhancing power output, response speed, and running smoothness. The components used also play a key role in the thermodynamic efficiency and operational reliability of the entire system.
A Successful Model of Global Development
This project is a model of Liebherr's international development structure. Expert teams from Switzerland, Germany, and China are working closely together to achieve rapid system integration and validation.
Through further cooperation with proven partners and technologies, the further development of the existing platforms shows that continuity, quality, and collaborative engineering development ultimately pay off. SNAT's decision to continue using Liebherr technology on its new platform fully affirms the strategic alignment of the two companies in terms of efficiency, scalability, and future sustainable development.
