Introduction
"Fifth Facade"refers to theroof surfaceof a building. The urban fifth facade includes urban landscape elements such as building roofs, windows (balconies), air-conditioning units, and elevated corridors. Methods for enhancing the fifth facade include roof greening, rooftop commerce, rooftop photovoltaics, and the low-altitude economy, which can be combined in various ways for integrated design. To this end, the Guangzhou Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Bureau issued the "Guiding Opinions on Enhancing the Quality of the Urban Fifth Facade through Planning and Construction (Trial)" and the "Guangzhou Urban Fifth Facade Optimization Design Guidelines." Through two feature articles, we will start fromroof greening, rooftop commerce, rooftop sports fields, and rooftop photovoltaics—these four core types—and, combining planning and design key points, our institute's experience, and practical cases, provide interpretation and professional sharing on the innovative utilization and quality enhancement of the urban fifth facade.
I. Roof Greening
Green roofshave multiple values including ecological landscape and economic benefits: they can reduce dust and noise and improve the quality of the living environment; they can mitigate the heat island effect and deliver ecological benefits; they can enhance roof quality and extend roof lifespan; they can save energy consumption, keeping buildings warm in winter and cool in summer; and they can increase urban green coverage and create aerial landscapes, among other benefits.
1. Diverse Approaches to Roof Greening
Roof greening can, in accordance with local conditions, create rooftopmini parks, mini vegetable gardens, mini orchards, and mini flower gardensto improve the living environment, allowing people to enjoy greenery and flowers without leaving home. For flat roofs and sloped roofs with a slope of less than 15° that have limited renovation funds, ordinary structural load-bearing capacity, and small roof areas, basic greening is recommended—quick, efficient, and effective. Two approaches can be adopted: lawn-style or container-style, both of which are lightweight, low-cost, easy to maintain, and simple to construct. If the roof has sufficient load-bearing capacity and ample space, and is accessible for viewing, garden-style landscape features can be created by combining and planting vines, herbaceous plants, shrubs, and small trees, along with garden paths, seating, and landscape features, creating a high-quality landscape where one can enjoy "a profusion of flowers" on the rooftop throughout the year. Eco-friendly planting techniques and methods can also be used to grow vegetables and fruits, experiencing the joy of spring sowing and autumn harvest and savoring the sweetness of fresh produce. II. Rooftop Economy
The rooftop economyrefers to a new business model that utilizes building rooftop spaces, introducing leisure, cultural, and entertainment elements through open operations. This model not only enriches the use of urban space but also provides citizens with new leisure venues where they can comfortably drink coffee, enjoy herbal tea, and stargaze on the roof, or host fashion shows and music festivals.
1. From Functional Space to Emotional Space
Rooftop spaces can provide people with basic service functions, such as creating neighborhood centers with rest areas, small libraries, children's play areas, or community kitchens, becoming vibrant hubs for neighborhood exchange, learning, and entertainment, allowing residents to release stress through exercise and strengthen bonds through communication. Lightweight urban furniture can also be installed to create cultural activity spaces, such as hosting art exhibitions and open-air concerts, making the rooftop a cultural exchange platform that is both visually appealing and interactive. Particular attention must be paid to safety regulations for outdoor facilities; when furniture or installations exceed 2 meters in height, windproof reinforcement measures must be implemented. If the roof has sufficient area and load-bearing capacity, richer and more diverse business models can also be considered, such as creating a rooftop café or restaurant, or planning a rooftop-themed amusement park, allowing customers to enjoy food and leisure while experiencing the unique sensation of high-altitude views, further enhancing the commercial value of the space.
2. Outstanding Cases of Rooftop Commerce

A row of approximately 7 m² "responsibility plots" is planned, with vegetable seedling planting activities carried out in different seasons, attracting young apartment residents interested in agriculture as well as nearby homemakers and elderly people to participate in daily care.
