On July 12, 2025, the 34th Mao Yisheng Science and Technology Award Ceremony, jointly hosted by the Mao Yisheng Science and Technology Education Foundation and other organizations, was grandly held in Chengdu.Professor Song Erxiang from the Department of Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University was awarded the 2024 Mao Yisheng Science and Technology Award—Grand Prize in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. This grand prizeis selected once every two years, with a "Grand Prize" (1-2 recipients) and a "Young Investigator Award" (1-5 recipients). The Bridge Grand Prize and the Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Grand Prize under it have been widely recognized as the highest individual honors in the field of civil engineering in China.

Song Erxiang

Professor and doctoral supervisor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University. He is an honorary council member of the Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Branch and the Tunnel and Underground Engineering Branch of the China Civil Engineering Society, Director of the Foundation Pit Engineering Discipline Group of the Building Construction Branch of the Architectural Society of China, a visiting professor at Taiyuan University of Technology, and an editorial board member of the journals"Chinese Journal of Geotechnical Engineering","Engineering Mechanics", "International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics", and "Geomechanics and Engineering". He has been engaged in research in the field of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering for many years, and has innovatively developed a relatively systematic set of theories and methods ranging from constitutive models to seepage, consolidation, large deformation, soil dynamic analysis, and THM multi-field coupled computation. Several of his early achievements were incorporated into the geotechnical finite element software Plaxis (a general-purpose geotechnical finite element computation software), helping it become an internationally renowned software used by tens of thousands of research and engineering institutions. At the same time, he has deeply revealed the mechanical mechanisms of various engineering problems and effectively solved practical problems, having been involved in major projects such as the ultra-deep foundation pit of the north anchorage of the Runyang Bridge, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao immersed tube tunnel, the extra-large caisson of the Wufengshan Bridge, and the site safety assessment of FAST (the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope). Some of his achievements have received one First Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, three provincial and ministerial-level Special Prizes, three First Prizes, and four Second Prizes. He has also been selected as the lecturer of the Huang Wenxi Lecture (28th Lecture) and received theChinese Society of Theoretical and Applied MechanicsThird Huang Wenxi-Chen Zongji Geotechnical Mechanics Award Achievement Award. He has published the book "Soil Mechanics Theory and Numerical Methods" and more than 200 papers, which have been extensively cited by peers at home and abroad; several of them have respectively received certificates such as the National Top 100 Most Influential Academic Papers, the High-Impact Paper of the Chinese Journal of Geotechnical Engineering in Its 40 Years of Publication, the Outstanding Paper of the China Civil Engineering Society, and Highly Cited Papers. In recent years, his research results on foundation pit stability verification methods and undrained computation theory for saturated soil have attracted the attention of peers and provided references for the revision of relevant technical standards and even textbooks.

Mao Yisheng Science and Technology Award—Grand Prize in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering

The Mao Yisheng Science and Technology Award established by the Mao Yisheng Science and Technology Education Foundation is a science and technology award project approved by the Awards Office of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and established relying on social forces, comprising multiple sub-awards. Among them, the Bridge Grand Prize and the Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Grand Prize have become widely recognized as the highest individual honor awards in the field of civil engineering in China.

In order to commend scientific and technological workers who have made outstanding contributions in the discipline of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering and to promote scientific and technological progress and talent cultivation in this field, the Beijing Mao Yisheng Science and Technology Education Foundation has specially established the "Mao Yisheng Science and Technology Award—Grand Prize in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering" and the "Mao Yisheng Science and Technology Award—Young Investigator Award in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering". These awards are selected once every two years, with 1-2 Grand Prize recipients and 1-5 Young Investigator Award recipients per session.
