Recently, Singapore's first metro entrance/exit passage project constructed using the rectangular pipe-jacking method—the Singapore North-South Corridor N109A project undertaken by STEC Urban Construction International—was successfully completed. With "STEC technology + domestically produced equipment," the tunnel builders served Singapore's low-impact urban transport construction and supported the high-quality development of transportation in the Lion City.

Singapore North-South Corridor N109A Project

The 21.5-kilometer North-South Corridor is Singapore's first transport facility integrating an express bus lane, a cycling trunk route, and an expressway, connecting the northern towns of Singapore with the central city center. Once completed, it will greatly improve residents' travel efficiency. The N109A contract section undertaken by STEC Urban Construction International is located between Bright Hill Drive and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 in Singapore. The project mainly includes the design and construction of an approximately 800-meter-long cut-and-cover tunnel with three lanes in each direction, as well as the underground infrastructure of Teck Ghee MRT Station.

The rectangular pipe-jacking equipment used in the N109A contract section was manufactured by STEC Urban Construction Equipment, with a width of 7.63 meters and a height of 6.43 meters, specifically forTeck GheeStation entrance/exit underground passage excavation. The two passages are 36 meters and 56 meters long respectively and have now been fully completed.

The "innovative first battle" of domestically produced rectangular pipe jacking

The cut-and-cover tunnel section of the N109A project has a large excavation area and relatively shallow burial depth, and the strata contain highly weathered rock, sedimentary soil, and quicksand layers. These complex geological factors place extremely high demands on the technical process. At the same time, beneath the tunnel lies an intricate "underground network," densely distributed with various pipeline groups such as cables, communication lines, and water pipes.

During construction, the domestically produced rectangular pipe jacking not only had to continuously pass beneath busy traffic with three lanes in each direction, but also had a minimum clear distance of only 1.02 meters from various pipelines. The slightest mistake could cause serious problems such as power outages, communication failures, and water pipe bursts. In addition, the project is located in the densely populated Ang Mo Kio residential area, where requirements for environmental quality control are also very strict.

Facing these difficulties, the STEC Urban Construction International project team repeatedly refined the construction plan, striving to win the "Lion City first battle" of using rectangular pipe jacking to build metro entrances and exits. In terms of safety production, the project team formulated thorough safety assurance and emergency rescue plans, using every effort to prevent any eventuality. In terms of environmental protection, the project team adopted special environmental protection measures for issues such as noise, dust, and vibration, achieving both project progress and environmental protection.

Excellent engineering wins praise from the Singapore market

In the first half of the year, the N109A rectangular pipe jacking basically completed all crossing tasks. During project advancement, STEC's rectangular pipe jacking progressed steadily, greatly improving project delivery efficiency. At the same time, the rectangular pipe-jacking technology demonstrated clear advantages in reducing road disturbance, reducing pipeline relocation, and lowering noise and dust, and was praised by the owner, Singapore's Land Transport Authority. In addition, multiple professional teams and industry organizations, including Singapore's Building and Construction Authority, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, and the Jakarta public transport integration team from Indonesia, visited the N109A contract section to investigate the project construction situation and highly praised the project's construction achievements.

At present, STEC Urban Construction International is working with the owner, supervisor, and other parties to fully promote the application of rectangular pipe-jacking technology in Singapore, deeply analyzing its significant advantages in improving construction efficiency, ensuring project quality, and reducing costs, so as to drive the iterative upgrading of the underground engineering industry in the Southeast Asian market.
