The "2013 Global Construction Machinery Industry Conference" was held in Beijing on the 16th, with overcapacity in the industry becoming a consensus among all parties. However, several industry figures pointed out that China's construction machinery industry will still maintain a certain growth rate in the coming years. Internationalization strategy has become the development approach for Chinese construction machinery enterprises, and many companies have already begun to expand into overseas markets.

  Intensifying Competition and Growing Demand

Zhan Chunxin, Chairman of Zoomlion, pointed out that the global construction machinery industry is in a state of relative overcapacity, with fierce competition among enterprises, and companies need to innovate and adjust their product structures. Wang Min, Chairman of XCMG, also believes that in the next five years, competition will become even more intense in the construction machinery industry, both globally and in China. The next five years will be a new round of "elimination period" for China's construction machinery industry, and only those that remain will be truly competitive enterprises.

Zhan Chunxin also pointed out that when China's GDP growth falls below double digits, the construction machinery industry will be in a state of overcapacity. Currently, China's GDP growth rate is 7-8%, and the overcapacity situation in the construction machinery industry will persist. Based on experience from the past few years, the development speed of the construction machinery industry is generally twice the national GDP growth rate. If China's GDP growth rate continues to remain at 7-8%, the growth rate of the construction machinery industry will be around 15%.

Various viewpoints agree that the slowdown in infrastructure investment growth is an inevitable result of economic structural reform, but for the manufacturing industry with severe overcapacity, there will not be a rapid cooling, but rather a relatively stable growth rate. Goldman Sachs analysis pointed out that most of the investment slowdown will occur in general manufacturing and mining sectors, where investment grew by about 8 times and 7 times respectively between 2004 and 2011, while infrastructure investment grew by only 270%. Even if fixed asset investment may further slow down in the future, it will still maintain steady growth. In fact, there has been continuous positive news recently in areas such as high-speed rail, highways, railways, urban rail transit, and municipal construction in China, providing certain support for the demand for construction machinery.

Expanding Overseas at the Right Opportunity

Experts and business executives attending the 2013 Global Construction Machinery Industry Conference generally stated that in the face of overcapacity, global competition will intensify, and enterprises should implement internationalization strategies and seek suitable opportunities for overseas expansion.

Yu Mengsheng, Executive President of Shandong Lingong Construction Machinery Co., Ltd., believes that Chinese construction machinery manufacturers have already possessed the strength to "touch the line" of the world in terms of products and technology. Chinese enterprises should seize this opportunity to broaden international market channels.

Zeng Anguang, Vice Chairman of LiuGong, pointed out that competition and cooperation have become the main theme of development in today's global industrial and economic fields. China has become the world's largest construction machinery market, and foreign enterprises have also achieved significant development in China. At the same time, Chinese enterprises are accelerating their exploration and layout in overseas markets. It is hoped that Europe, the United States, Japan, and emerging markets will accept new participants with the same fair attitude.

Industry insiders pointed out that although Chinese construction machinery enterprises have made progress in recent years, there is still a large gap with international advanced levels in key technologies. Overseas market expansion can prompt Chinese enterprises to integrate with international standards more quickly, form a market-oriented production mechanism, and is expected to truly set enterprises on the path of technological innovation, thereby improving their technical level.
