Outside the Hebao Tunnel on the Taixi Railway, it is a world of ice and snow, but an intelligent temperature control system ensures that workers can work warmly inside the tunnel.
"On the seventh day of the ninth month, the rivers thaw," and the weather is gradually warming up, but in the Bashang area of Zhangjiakou, Hebei, people's outdoor perceived temperature is still very low. At the construction site of the Hebao Tunnel in the Hebei section of the Taixi Railway, located in Zhangbei County, the temperature outside the tunnel is as low as -30°C, and more than 300 construction workers, undaunted by the freezing cold, are making every effort to advance the tunnel construction.
At the deepest point of the Hebao Tunnel, shotcrete and rock-bolt support worker Wang Yandong and his fellow workers, dressed in heavy work clothes and various protective equipment, carry out construction in a space less than 5 meters in both height and width.
The Taixi Railway starts from Taizicheng Station on the Chongli Railway in the south and extends north to Xilinhot City in the Xilin Gol League of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, with a total length of 392.2 kilometers and a design speed of 160 kilometers per hour. The previously opened Taichong section of the Taixi Railway once provided important transportation support for the Beijing Winter Olympics.
Wang Yandong, 45, is from Baoding, Hebei. Although the work area is not far from his home, he has not returned home since he joined the construction of the Hebao Tunnel in March last year. As a veteran employee of China Railway 22nd Bureau Group, he had previously participated in the construction of several "railway-integrated Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei" projects, including the Beijing-Shenyang and Datong-Zhangjiakou lines. "The Hebao Tunnel is less than 2,000 meters long, but its geological conditions are complex, making it a high-risk construction tunnel. Together with the Chenjiaying Tunnel, it is a key node (project) connecting the Zhangbei and Guyuan stations," Wang Yandong said. The Bashang area of Zhangjiakou has no railway to this day. In order to realize the high-speed train dream of the people in the Bashang area as soon as possible, they are going all out, seizing every favorable condition to rush the construction schedule.
The effective construction period in the Bashang area of Zhangjiakou is very short each year. From May, when temperatures rise, to October, when winter begins, there are only six months of effective construction time. In winter, all construction work outside the tunnel must stop. Construction inside the tunnel, however, is unaffected because the temperature inside is relatively high. In order to make the railway ready for opening by December 2026, during the just-concluded Spring Festival of the Year of the Snake, Wang Yandong and the project's seven work teams all chose to stay and rush the schedule. "The weather is cold but the work does not stop; every minute and every second counts," Wang Yandong said.
To ensure a good tunnel construction environment, the project department installed two windproof and thermal insulation door curtains along the route by which construction workers enter the working faces. The intelligent temperature control system of the project engineering headquarters monitors environmental data at seven working faces in real time, and 20 hot-air cannons start and stop automatically according to temperature changes, ensuring that construction workers work warmly and that construction quality is maintained. This industrialized construction model enabled the Hebao Tunnel's construction progress during the Spring Festival to run 12 working days ahead of the original plan.
According to reports, the Taixi Railway has a total length of 117.35 kilometers within Zhangjiakou City, passing through Chongli District, Zhangbei County, Guyuan County, and Saibei Management District, and building three new stations: Zhangbei Station, Guyuan Station, and Saibei Management District Station. After completion and opening to traffic, it will end the history of no railways in Zhangbei, Guyuan, and other places in Zhangjiakou. At the same time, as a regional trunk railway, once completed, the Taixi Railway will, together with the Chongli Railway and the Beijing-Zhangjiakou High-Speed Railway, jointly form a fast passenger transport corridor to Beijing for the northern part of Zhangjiakou and the Xilin Gol League, effectively driving the economic development of the areas along the line.
