On February 18, with the successful hoisting and lowering into the shaft of the 390-tonne main drive, the assembly of the "Qihang" shield machine for the Jinan Aerospace Avenue Yellow River Crossing Tunnel project—invested in and constructed by Jinan Urban Construction Group and built by China Railway 14th Bureau Group—made new progress, bringing it one step closer to the shield launch milestone.
The Jinan Aerospace Avenue Yellow River Crossing Tunnel is located in Jinan High-tech Zone and the Old-New Kinetic Energy Conversion Start-up Area, and is an important corridor linking Yaoqiang International Airport and the Start-up Area. The tunnel has a total length of 3,888 meters, with a shield-driven section of 3,252 meters, a segment outer diameter of 14.5 meters, a design driving speed of 60 km/h, and six lanes in both directions. It adopts a double-tube, single-layer shield configuration to cross the Yellow River, involving high construction risk and great difficulty.
The "Qihang" shield machine used for the construction of the Jinan Aerospace Avenue Yellow River Crossing Tunnel is 161 meters long, with a total weight of approximately 4,295 tonnes and a diameter of 15.06 meters. The main drive hoisted and lowered into the shaft this time is 7.6 meters wide and weighs 390 tonnes; it is the core component of the entire shield machine and the most critical link in the overall hoisting and assembly stage of the shield machine.
According to Xue Shunqiang, deputy shield manager of China Railway 14th Bureau Group, the shield launch gradient of the tunnel reaches 4%, and to seat the "heart" properly, the docking error must be controlled within 4 millimeters—the difficulty and risk level are self-evident. At the same time, the main drive is an oversized and overweight component, with strict working environment requirements, high demands on coordination among trades and personnel, and great difficulty in coordinating multiple interlocking processes.
To ensure the smooth lowering of the main drive into the shaft, the project team deployed scientifically and planned ahead, repeatedly studied the construction site, and formulated a detailed plan for hoisting and lowering the main drive into the shaft, ensuring that the surrounding environment met construction requirements. On the morning of that day, as the order was given, an 800-tonne crawler crane smoothly lifted the main drive, which underwent a series of highly difficult maneuvers in the air such as lifting, turning over, and rotating; after adjusting its orientation bit by bit on site, it was slowly lowered into the launch shaft and successfully mated with the shield body underground.
It is reported that the overall assembly progress of the "Qihang" shield machine for the Jinan Aerospace Avenue Yellow River Crossing Tunnel project has now exceeded half, with supporting equipment 60% assembled, entering the critical stage of underground assembly. Next, the hoisting and lowering of the shield machine's cutterhead into the shaft will be carried out, along with comprehensive installation and commissioning of the entire shield machine before launch.
The Jinan Aerospace Avenue Yellow River Crossing Tunnel project is a major project for Jinan City in implementing the "ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin" and responding to the strategy of the "first national comprehensive pilot zone for old-new kinetic energy conversion." Once completed, the project will provide a direct connection from Jinan Yaoqiang Airport to the Jinan Old-New Kinetic Energy Conversion Start-up Area, further improving the urban road network system on both banks of the Yellow River, strengthening the connection between urban expressways and surrounding expressways and important transportation hubs, and forming a fully functional backbone road network with "connectivity across both banks."
