Recently, the Jinan Huanggang Road Yellow River Crossing Tunnel has accelerated its construction progress after the holiday, with the world's largest-diameter shield machine tunneling beneath the Yellow River toward the goal of tunnel breakthrough this year. It is understood that the Jinan Huanggang Road Yellow River Crossing Tunnel has accumulated nearly 1,500 meters of tunneling, with the tunnel breakthrough planned for the end of 2025 and opening to traffic in September 2026.
On February 18, reporters from Qilu Evening News·Qilu One Point came to the construction site of the Jinan Huanggang Road Yellow River Crossing Tunnel. At present, the north bank working shaft and machine frame section, and the south bank working shaft and cut-and-cover/covered main structure have been completed, and construction is underway on the north bank interchange bridge section and the south bank ramp section main structure. The shield section completed 426 meters in December 2024, setting a record for the highest monthly shield tunneling advance of 17 meters; at the current stage, shield construction efficiency is stable at 8-9 rings (16-18 meters) per day. The project has accumulated 718 rings (nearly 1,500 meters) of tunneling, accounting for 43.64% of the total designed 1,645 rings (3,290 meters).
The Jinan Huanggang Road Yellow River Crossing Tunnel Project is located in Tianqiao District, Jinan City, and the Jinan Start-up Area for Growth Drivers Transformation. It starts in the south at the intersection of Lanxiang Middle Road and Huanggang Road, and runs northward successively beneath Erhuan North Road, the Ring North Expressway, the south bank levee, the Yellow River, the north bank levee, and the Queshan Reservoir sedimentation basin; after emerging above ground, a toll station is provided, and the terminus connects with the National Highway 309 interchange. The route is about 5.8 kilometers long in total, of which the tunnel section is about 4.8 kilometers long and the shield section is about 3.3 kilometers long. The tunnel adopts a single-tube double-deck shield tunnel scheme with an outer diameter of 16.8 meters; the road grade is designed to urban main road standards, with six lanes in both directions, a design speed of 60 kilometers per hour, and a total project investment of about 7.409 billion yuan. The project has been listed as a 2025 provincial major project.
The project started construction in December 2022; the shield machine rolled off the production line on May 19, 2024, and tunneling was launched on September 1. The shield machine is expected to reach the north bank levee of the Yellow River on March 15, 2025, and the south bank levee of the Yellow River on October 1, 2025. The tunnel breakthrough is planned for the end of 2025, with opening to traffic in September 2026.
It is understood that Jinan Urban Construction Group Co., Ltd. is responsible for the investment, construction, and operation of the Jinan Huanggang Road Yellow River Crossing Tunnel Project. The shield excavation diameter of the project is 17.5 meters, making it the world's largest-diameter underwater shield tunnel. Once completed, the project will provide strong support for the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin, and will also help promote interconnectivity between Jinan's main urban area and the Start-up Area for Growth Drivers Transformation. It is a landmark project promoting Jinan's transition from the "Daming Lake Era" to the "Yellow River Era."
