Although the Spring Festival of the Year of the Snake is approaching, the working atmosphere at the CNNC Engineering R&D Base in Langfang, Hebei, remains as vibrant as ever.
The CNNC Engineering Langfang R&D Base is a "non-nuclear base" focused on engineering and scientific research for nuclear power technology. It houses a variety of independent innovation research facilities for nuclear science and technology, covering important fields such as nuclear power risk assessment, advanced nuclear power containment technology, nuclear environment simulation, and nuclear equipment testing.
Recently, reporters from China News Service visited the CNNC Engineering R&D Base and experienced the base's accelerated construction and its strong atmosphere of pursuing innovation and green development.Chen Guangheng, Director of the R&D Center of the Advanced Nuclear Energy Technology Research Institute of CNNC Engineering, told reporters that the base covers about 248 mu and has undergone phased construction over seven years. Phase I has already been put into operation, and Phase II was also put into use by the end of 2024.Its function as a science and technology innovation platform is gradually becoming more prominent. It can not only provide venues for the group's basic and frontier research and enhance independent innovation capabilities in nuclear power and nuclear chemical engineering, but also help introduce Hebei's industrial and policy resources and promote the coordinated development of Beijing and Hebei.
Nuclear safety is an eternal topic in the field of nuclear energy and the premise and foundation for developing nuclear energy. Comprehensively improving the performance of the containment system is of great significance for the research and development of new-generation nuclear power technology and the safe operation of in-service power plants. How to use scientific research and test facilities to advance performance research on systems such as containment and further improve the safety of nuclear power production and nuclear energy applications is a major mission of the CNNC Engineering Langfang R&D Base.

"Xuanwu," located at the CNNC Engineering Langfang R&D Base, is a containment structural performance experimental platform built under the National Key R&D Program. It can be used for containment pressure test research, research on structural performance and containment capacity under simulated severe accident thermo-mechanical coupling conditions, technical research on an intelligent platform for containment monitoring, and containment aging management.
Entering Plot A of the Langfang R&D Base, a solid and imposing giant stands before the reporters. This is "Xuanwu." "Xuanwu" is a containment structural performance experimental platform built under the National Key R&D Program. It includes a containment structural model, a thermo-mechanical coupling loading system, and an intelligent monitoring system, and can carry out multiple containment-related studies. Yao Di, Deputy Director of the Innovation Center of the Advanced Nuclear Energy Technology Research Institute of CNNC Engineering, introduced that "Xuanwu" is currently the world's largest containment model experimental platform. In June 2023, "Xuanwu" successfully completed all key R&D test tasks, providing valuable test data for evaluating containment structural performance under severe accidents. It is expected to further expand experimental tasks in the future, continue to support pressurized water reactor research, and promote nuclear science and technology innovation.
Standing next to "Xuanwu" is the containment thermal-hydraulic comprehensive experimental facility, the "Pangu" test rig. This is also the base's first scientific research test rig and made great contributions to the development of Hualong One. According to reports, "Pangu" is the most heavily utilized and busiest facility at the base, with almost no idle time throughout the year.
CNNC Engineering has built a key core test rig based on the follow-up Hualong model—the containment and safety system comprehensive test rig "Kunpeng"—to verify the safety system design scheme, accident handling strategies, and independently developed software for the follow-up Hualong model, introduced Yang Changjiang, Chief Designer of the Follow-up Hualong Reactor Engineering System at the Innovation Center of the Advanced Nuclear Energy Technology Research Institute of CNNC Engineering. At present, the "Kunpeng" rig has entered the commissioning stage, and it is expected that test verification of the safety design scheme for the follow-up Hualong model will be carried out in 2025.
These scientific research facilities embody the dedication of nuclear industry workers, who remain busy on the front line on the eve of the Spring Festival of the Year of the Snake, contributing to the development of the nuclear cause.
