On November 26, bauma CHINA 2024 (hereinafter referred to as "bauma China") kicked off at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. More than 3,400 exhibitors from 32 countries and regions around the world collectively "flexed their muscles" here, and over 200,000 visitors from more than 130 countries and regions will witness the new technologies, new momentum, and new trends of the global construction machinery industry during the four-day exhibition.

Numerous new products unveiled

Stepping into bauma China is like walking into a "steel forest"; the outdoor exhibition area is lined with all kinds of engineering vehicles, earthmoving machinery, lifting machinery, mining machinery, and other mechanical products. And after a gap of four years, new energy construction machinery technology, which was once still in the embryonic stage, has already become a core exhibit of this year's bauma China. In addition, green new energy is quietly changing the underlying character of the construction machinery industry.

It is understood that this bauma China features 12 major exhibition sectors, including engineering vehicles, earthmoving machinery, road machinery, lifting machinery, construction equipment, mining machinery, building materials machinery, engineering vehicle parts, and intelligent solutions.

In the small smart construction site area displayed by XCMG, the company's independently designed unmanned road roller is moving forward precisely and at a constant speed along the yellow construction line. When a block of ice appears on the ground ahead of the road roller, it can quickly sense it and immediately stop moving forward, and another road equipment following closely behind will also stop operating at the same time.

On-site staff told the Securities Daily reporter that the scene displayed in the area is the company's unmanned cluster intelligent construction for road surface compaction during road construction, which can realize intelligent cluster decision-making, planning, and control functions.

At the small smart construction site set up at the Zoomlion booth, the company's independently designed unmanned excavators, unmanned loaders, and other products are operating. Equipped with a visual recognition system, they can easily distinguish the three different colors of square bricks placed in front of the site by color and position precisely, and then precisely adjust the gripper to complete the intelligent collaborative operation of the entire process.

Zoomlion on-site staff told the Securities Daily reporter that the company's understanding of product intelligence covers the entire chain of the operation cycle, from single-machine intelligence to cluster collaboration and then to smart construction. To facilitate operation and control, these unmanned machines are also equipped with multiple control modes such as voice control, remote cockpit control, and remote controller control, to adapt to diverse operational control needs. These key technologies have already been applied at large-scale engineering sites such as smart mines, smart nuclear power, and smart bridges, helping to improve operational safety and work efficiency.

In addition to complete-machine enterprises, many core component enterprises of construction machinery, such as Weichai Power and Hengli Hydraulic, also showcased the company's new products and new technologies.

The construction machinery industry has undergone tremendous leaps over the past four years, especially in intelligentization, high-end development, and digitalization, which is closely related to policy support. The introduction of policies such as the Work Plan for Stable Growth of the Machinery Industry (2023-2024), the Guiding Opinions on Quality Infrastructure Helping Improve Quality Linkage of Industrial Chains and Supply Chains, and the Reference Guide for Integrated Application of the Industrial Internet and the Construction Machinery Industry has provided strong support for the development of the construction machinery industry. At the same time, the industry is encouraged to pursue digital transformation, which has promoted comprehensive cost reduction and efficiency improvement among enterprises and enhanced the stability of product quality.

The new energy track is booming

In XCMG's new energy exhibition area, 48 new energy main machine products and 21 new energy core components were unveiled in a concentrated manner. Among them, the company's signature new energy product, the world's largest tonnage pure electric loader XC9108-EV, has a rated load of up to 11 tons, can work for 8 hours after 1 hour of charging, reduces the energy consumption of the whole machine by more than 70%, and improves operating efficiency by 20%.

In addition to the pure electric loader, XCMG also displayed new models such as battery-swapping models, hybrid models equipped with high-speed electric drive systems, and 26-ton electric-drive super-large-tonnage loaders. At the same time, the company's pure electric small loaders, pure electric skid-steer loaders, and pure electric backhoe loaders also appeared at this exhibition.

Jiang Liqiao, general manager and party secretary of XCMG's Earthmoving Machinery Business Unit, told the Securities Daily reporter that at this bauma China, the company focused on presenting XCMG's series-based, intelligent, and green new energy loading machinery products and technologies. Among them, XCMG's new energy loading machinery covers 0.8 tons to 35 tons, forming a product layout across multiple energy routes such as pure electric, oil-electric hybrid, hydrogen fuel cell, and methanol engine, with the most complete industry spectrum, the richest technical routes, and the highest market recognition, and has now been exported in batches to 23 countries and regions around the world.

Zoomlion also exhibited nearly 20 of the company's green new energy products at this bauma China, accounting for about one quarter of the company's total exhibited products, covering a variety of new energy technologies and all product lines. Relevant company staff told the Securities Daily reporter that, taking Zoomlion's aerial work machinery and forklifts as examples, the penetration rate of electric products has exceeded 90% and 40%, respectively.

In competing on the new energy track, batteries are key. Weichai Power staff at the exhibition site told reporters that at this exhibition the company brought a number of new energy power battery products that can be applied to large, medium, and small construction machinery such as loaders, excavators, and mining trucks. Lovol Heavy Industry and Shantui Construction Machinery, as enterprises in the construction machinery segment under Shandong Heavy Industry Group, mostly use power batteries independently developed by Weichai Power in their new energy products, and have now achieved coordination across the complete machine industry chain.

The pace of "going global" is accelerating

The rapid development of China's infrastructure has provided a broad stage for the construction machinery industry, making it a "hard name card" of national strength.

Data released by the General Administration of Customs show that from January to October 2024, China's import and export trade value of construction machinery was 45.49 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 5.95%. Among them, the import value was 2.176 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 2.69%; the export value was 43.314 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 6.12%.

Shantui Construction Machinery staff at the exhibition site said that next year the company will focus its main energy on expanding overseas markets. "The company will carry out targeted development, developing differentiated products for different regions and different working conditions, to ensure the strong adaptability of the company's products and meet the operational needs of overseas products. At the same time, the company will further improve its service capabilities in overseas markets."

Chen Xingwen, chief strategy officer of Kurosaki Capital, told the Securities Daily reporter, "In the domestic market, with continued policy support and increased infrastructure investment, the construction machinery industry is expected to maintain stable growth. In the international market, with the deepening advancement of the Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese construction machinery enterprises have also ushered in more opportunities for international cooperation. In terms of segmented fields, areas with growing emerging demand such as new energy equipment installation and large equipment lifting, as well as products less related to real estate and infrastructure such as forklifts and aerial work platforms, may contain new economic growth points."
