On the 19th, the Information Office of the Shandong Provincial Government held a press conference to introduce the expansion of geological work in the new era and its role in supporting green, low-carbon, and high-quality development.
Liu Xiangyuan, Deputy Director of the Provincial Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, introduced that over the years, the bureau has focused on serving the construction of a strong maritime province. With the support of the Provincial Department of Natural Resources, it has actively undertaken and implemented survey and evaluation projects in coastal zones, bays, islands, and marine exclusive economic zones and other related areas, achieving a series of outstanding results and providing geological technical support for Shandong Province's marine economic development and marine ecological environmental protection.
Exploring the sea for resources, new achievements have been made in marine geological and mineral exploration. Mineral resource surveys were carried out in offshore areas such as the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea, gaining a preliminary understanding of the distribution, types, and resource potential of mineral resources in the province's offshore areas. Metallogenic prospect predictions were made for major minerals such as gold, sea sand, and coal. On this basis, the "Atlas of Geology and Mineral Resources of Shandong Province" was compiled and published, displaying the distribution of mineral resources in Shandong Province. The gold deposit discovered in the northern waters of Sanshandao is China's first gold deposit discovered at sea. In 2023, one project was approved under the National Key R&D Program of the 14th Five-Year Plan, achieving a historic breakthrough in which a grassroots geological exploration unit led a national science and technology project nationwide in the geological and mineral system. In collaboration with units such as the Qingdao Institute of Marine Geology, a study was completed to further promote the exploration, development, and utilization of marine mineral resources in Shandong Province. The self-developed shallow-sea drilling platform, "Tanhai No. 1," filled the gap in China's continental shelf offshore drilling platforms, broke through the bottleneck constraints of offshore shallow-sea work platforms, and greatly enhanced the capacity for mineral resource exploration in sea areas.
Protecting the blue sea, new progress has been made in promoting marine ecological environmental protection. A comprehensive geological survey of Weihai Liugong Island and its surrounding waters was carried out, promoting Liugong Island's development into a national-level geopark integrating functions such as science popularization, scientific research, education, and teaching. An implementation plan for the ecological restoration and protection project of mountains, waters, forests, seas, and cities on Changdao was compiled, continuously serving the construction of the Marine Ecological Civilization Comprehensive Pilot Zone on Changdao, Yantai, and providing geological support for striving to create China's first marine national park. The tourism geological survey and evaluation of Qingdao Lingshan Island was completed, supporting Lingshan Island's approval as one of China's first batch of geological cultural villages (towns) and making it China's first geological cultural island, helping Lingshan Island build a national model of "green islands, clean beaches, clear waters, and abundant resources." The South Yellow Sea Offshore Observation and Experimental Station has played an important role in Shandong Province's Ulva prolifera control efforts and was commended by the provincial government. In 2024, the station was approved as the South Yellow Sea Field Scientific Observation and Research Station of the Ministry of Natural Resources. This is China's first in-situ, real-time, long-term comprehensive observation station within a marine exclusive economic zone, providing strong support for studying scientific issues such as seabed geological activity.
Building a foundation for sea-related development, new areas have been expanded in serving major national engineering projects. The completed offshore engineering geological survey in the Bohai Sea area reached a maximum borehole depth of 186.3 meters, one of the deepest engineering geological boreholes in the Bohai Strait, providing an engineering geological basis for major offshore infrastructure construction in the Bohai Sea. The offshore engineering geological survey implemented in Jiaozhou Bay provided geological technical support for the construction of the Jiaozhou Bay Cross-Sea Bridge and subsea tunnel. Around major engineering projects such as marine ranches, offshore wind power, offshore photovoltaics, subsea oil pipelines, and ports, a series of geological surveys, engineering investigations, and marine surveying and mapping were carried out in Qingdao, Yantai, Weihai, Dongying, and other places, providing professional technical support for the construction of major sea-related projects and geological safety.
