On September 28, the south-line shield tunnel of the Zhuhai Tunnel Project—an underwater super-large-diameter cross-sea tunnel under construction in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area—achieved dual-line breakthrough.

The Zhuhai Tunnel Project route runs parallel to the Zhuhai Bridge as a whole, starting from the east bank of the Zhuhai Bridge and ending at the west bank. The project used two super-large-diameter slurry balance shield machines with a diameter of 15.01 meters, named "Kaituo" and "Fenjin." The shield machines were tailor-made for the unique muddy soil strata of the Zhuhai area, with a total length of about 123 meters and a weight of about 4,200 tons, and all technical indicators have reached the world's leading level.

The Zhuhai Tunnel is designed as dual lines, north and south. In July this year, the north-line shield tunnel was completed first, and the breakthrough of the south-line tunnel this time marks the successful completion of the project's dual-line shield tunneling task. After the project is completed, the Zhuhai Tunnel and the Zhuhai Bridge will form a "north bridge, south tunnel" pattern connecting to Zhuhai Avenue. The Zhuhai Tunnel will have six lanes in both directions, allowing vehicles to pass through in five minutes, which will effectively ease traffic pressure on the Zhuhai Bridge and improve citizens' travel efficiency. In particular, during severe weather such as typhoons, it can ensure normal vehicle passage needs.
