Good news! The undersea section of the Zhuhai Tunnel has achieved dual-line breakthrough! New progress has been made in the construction of the Zhuhai Tunnel project. Following the breakthrough of the north line of the undersea tunnel on July 17, the south line was officially completed on September 28. A relevant person in charge of the Municipal Public Works Construction Center stated that the undersea tunnel section of the Zhuhai Tunnel is the controlling engineering of the entire project, and the dual-line breakthrough of the undersea tunnel section provides a guarantee for the full opening of the Zhuhai Tunnel to traffic.

The Zhuhai Tunnel project alignment runs parallel to and south of the existing Zhuhai Bridge, designed with six lanes in both directions and a driving speed of 80 kilometers per hour, with a total length of about 5 kilometers. The civil engineering works are divided into two contract sections, TJ1 and TJ2, for construction.

Among them, Contract Section TJ1 starts from the east bank of the Zhuhai Bridge in the west, passes beneath the Guadingjiao mountain by the mining method, then turns north to connect to the main line of Zhuhai Avenue; Contract Section TJ2 starts from the main line of the existing Zhuhai Avenue in the west, turns south to pass beneath the newly built auxiliary road, then turns to the south side of the Zhuhai Bridge, enters the mid-river section of the Modaomen Waterway by shield tunneling, and continues east to pass beneath the embankment, with a total length of 3.8 kilometers.

The undersea tunnel section of the Zhuhai Tunnel project is one of the most challenging super-large-diameter underwater shield tunnel projects in China. According to reports, the underwater shield tunnel works belong to the TJ2 contract section project, undertaken by China Railway Tunnel Group Co., Ltd. This section is 3,800 meters long, including 2,930 meters of undersea shield tunnel and 870 meters of open-cut section, with a maximum tunnel depth of 35 meters.

It is reported that with the dual-line breakthrough of the undersea tunnel and the commencement of blasting construction of the Guadingjiao mountain tunnel, the Zhuhai Tunnel project is expected to achieve full breakthrough in 2025, and will strive to be ready for traffic by the end of 2025.

By then, the Zhuhai Tunnel and the Zhuhai Bridge will form a pattern of "bridge above, tunnel below" connecting to Zhuhai Avenue, thereby improving the quality and speed of transportation between the eastern and western parts of Zhuhai.
