On September 28, the right tube of the Binjiang Tunnel of the Changjin Reconstruction and Expansion Project of the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway was successfully holed through, marking the full connection of all tunnels on the Jiangxi section of the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway reconstruction and expansion project.

It is reported that the reconstruction and expansion project on the Jiangxi section of the G60 Shanghai-Kunming Expressway involves a total of two tunnels. Among them, the Qingshan Tunnel, located in Pingxiang along the Shanghai-Kunming line, has a total length of 161 meters and was successfully holed through on January 16 this year.
The Binjiang Tunnel holed through this time is located in Yuanzhou District, Yichun City, with a total length of 775 meters. Construction started on June 6, 2023, and the tunnel was holed through after more than 460 days. The tunnel as a whole lies in a synclinal structure zone, with carbonaceous shale and locally distributed poor-quality coal seams and water-rich sections, developed fissures, and complex topographic and geological conditions. To ensure construction safety, the tunnel was constructed using the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method for organizing each process, following the principles of "early entry and late exit" and "advance pipe forepoling, strict grouting, short advance, weak blasting, strong support, tight sealing, and frequent measurement" to advance construction, overcoming technical difficulties such as asymmetric loading in some areas and poor geological surrounding rock, and achieving the smooth two-tube holing-through on schedule.

It is understood that the Jiangxi section of the G60 Shanghai-Kunming Expressway is 532 kilometers long and is the busiest east-west expressway in Jiangxi. In recent years, with economic development and increasing traffic volume, the existing four lanes can no longer meet the traffic demand of passing vehicles. To improve regional traffic conditions, since April 2022, Jiangxi Province has invested 49.545 billion yuan to upgrade 380.5 kilometers of the G60 Shanghai-Kunming Expressway in Jiangxi from four lanes to eight lanes. Among them, the Changfu to Jinyushi section is 179.5 kilometers long, and the Liyuan to Dongxiang section is 201 kilometers long. They are expected to be completed and open to traffic by the end of 2025.
According to reports, after the completion of the reconstruction and expansion project on the Jiangxi section of the G60 Shanghai-Kunming Expressway, the total mileage of eight-lane expressways in Jiangxi Province will exceed 960 kilometers. This will effectively enhance the traffic capacity and service level of Jiangxi's "cross-shaped" expressway main framework of the Beijing-Kowloon and Shanghai-Kunming corridors, boost the in-depth implementation of Jiangxi's "strengthening the provincial capital" strategy, and further integrate into the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
