On September 28, as a shield tunneling machine successfully arrived at the receiving shaft, the south-line shield tunnel of the Zhuhai Tunnel Project—an under-construction underwater extra-large-diameter shield cross-sea tunnel in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area—achieved breakthrough. Previously, the north-line shield tunnel of the project had achieved breakthrough earlier on July 17. The breakthrough of the south-line shield tunnel this time marks the successful completion of the project's dual-line shield tunneling task.

The alignment of the Zhuhai Tunnel Project runs parallel to the Zhuhai Bridge as a whole, starting from the east bank of the Zhuhai Bridge and ending at the west bank. During shield tunneling, the project team incorporated innovative technologies such as automatic control and sensing, implemented quality control throughout the entire construction process, and overcame technical challenges including tunneling in extremely soft shallow cover strata and crossing long-distance bedrock protrusions.

After completion, the Zhuhai Tunnel Project will, together with the existing Zhuhai Bridge, jointly form a east-west composite corridor in Zhuhai City, creating a parallel above-water and underwater bridge-tunnel configuration, alleviating traffic pressure between the eastern and western urban areas of Zhuhai, and promoting the economic and social development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
