Beijing, August 27 (Xinhua) Khartoum message: According to foreign media reports on the 27th, the Alba'at Dam in eastern Sudan recently collapsed, and the accident has caused dozens of deaths and about 200 people missing.
According to reports, the Alba'at Dam is located about 40 kilometers north of Port Sudan, Sudan's second-largest city and the capital of the Red Sea State. On local time the 25th, the dam partially collapsed due to continuous heavy rain, and it completely collapsed on the 26th.
Reuters, citing United Nations statistics, reported that the dam collapse has caused at least 30 deaths, about 50,000 people in the western part of the dam area have been affected, and the eastern part of the dam is inaccessible due to flooding, with no statistics available yet. Al Jazeera reported that a local official said the death toll has reached 60.
The Sudan Tribune reported that the floods caused by the dam collapse have submerged at least 15 villages and partially damaged 30 villages, and unconfirmed reports say the death toll may exceed one hundred. Local health authorities are concerned that the floods may further trigger disease outbreaks. As the dam bears nearly 60% of Port Sudan's freshwater supply, this accident is likely to lead to local water shortages.
The Associated Press reported that Sudan relies on dams to store seasonal precipitation, and the Alba'at Dam has a storage capacity of 25 million cubic meters. Reuters pointed out that Sudan's infrastructure, such as dams, roads, and bridges, was already in disrepair, and the armed conflict since April 2023 has caused infrastructure problems to be neglected.
The Sudan Tribune reported that Sudan entered the rainy season in June this year, and recent continuous heavy rains have triggered floods, which have so far affected nearly 320,000 people. The Associated Press, citing a report from the Sudanese government on the 26th, reported that over the past two months, large areas of the country have been inundated by floods, causing more than 130 deaths and the collapse or damage of more than 23,000 houses.
