"The Shandong Haiyang Nuclear Power Phase I project has cumulatively generated more than 113 billion kWh of electricity, equivalent to saving 48.31 million tons of raw coal and reducing 90.4 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. At present, the Phase II project is being advanced with high quality as planned." On June 27, the "'Nuclear' Together · Co-drawing a New Chapter of Green Energy" national media Yantai tour entered the Haiyang Nuclear Power Project of State Power Investment Corporation Shandong Nuclear Power Co., Ltd., to explore the shining "green answer sheet" of this "major national equipment."
Cumulative power generation of Haiyang Nuclear Power; exceeding 113 billion kWh
The Haiyang Nuclear Power Project is the first nuclear power station in Shandong Province to begin construction and be completed and put into operation. It is planned to build six million-kilowatt-class nuclear power units and one integrated small modular reactor, with room reserved for expansion by two more nuclear power units. Units 1 and 2 have each completed three refueling overhauls and entered their fourth fuel cycle. At present, the two units of the Phase I project have cumulatively generated more than 113 billion kWh of electricity over their service life.
According to reports, Units 3 and 4 of the Phase II project are expected to be fully commissioned in 2027. Units 5 and 6 of the Phase III project and the integrated small modular reactor demonstration project obtained permits to carry out preliminary work in September 2022, and various preliminary tasks are being advanced in an orderly manner. Once all eight units of Haiyang Nuclear Power are completed, the annual power generation will be about 80 billion kWh, which can reduce raw coal consumption by about 34.2 million tons per year and cut emissions of carbon dioxide by 64 million tons, sulfur dioxide by 208,000 tons, and nitrogen oxides by 180,000 tons. The emission reduction effect is equivalent to planting about 176,000 hectares of broadleaf forest, which is of great significance for improving Shandong Province's energy structure and regional ecological environment and provides a powerful nuclear energy engine for the high-quality economic and social development of Shandong Province.
"Warm Nuclear No. 1" has saved; 810,000 tons of raw coal consumption
In advancing carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, the energy sector is the main battlefield. On the premise of ensuring the safe and stable operation of units, Shandong Nuclear Power took the lead in China in carrying out research and practice on large pressurized water reactor cogeneration, and has successively built and put into operation the "Warm Nuclear No. 1" Phase I "park-level," Phase II "county-level," and Phase III "cross-prefecture-level city" nuclear heating projects, turning Haiyang into the country's first zero-carbon heating city and realizing for the first time in China cross-prefecture-level city nuclear heating from Haiyang City, Yantai, to Rushan City, Weihai. In 2023, the Phase III project of "Warm Nuclear No. 1" was put into operation, extending the heating area to Rushan City, Weihai, becoming China's first cross-prefecture-level city heating project, with the project's total heating area reaching 12.5 million square meters. As of April 2024, the "Warm Nuclear No. 1" project has cumulatively provided 9.01 million gigajoules of zero-carbon heat over five heating seasons, saving 810,000 tons of raw coal consumption, reducing 1.49 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, and reducing 6.76 million gigajoules of heat discharged into the environment.
"Making the people's sense of happiness more tangible" is both the confidence and determination to strive toward a better future and an essential part of striving to write a new chapter of Chinese-style modernization in Yantai. After Haiyang City achieved nuclear heating, residents' heating prices dropped by one yuan per square meter, and the people, while enjoying clean energy heating, also enjoy the dividends of green development. In addition, nuclear heating has also shown bright results in improving regional air quality and the marine ecological environment during the heating season. Compared with before nuclear heating, air quality during the heating season has improved markedly, while the area of sea temperature rise of 2 degrees Celsius has been reduced by 41 hectares, effectively improving the surrounding ecological environment. Going forward, Shandong Nuclear Power will, in conjunction with unit construction and regional demand, continue to advance the iterative upgrading of nuclear heating technology so that nuclear heating benefits broader regions and more people.
While achieving "zero-carbon" heating; realizing "zero-energy" water production
As Shandong's "first nuclear power plant," Shandong Nuclear Power, while supplying electricity and heat, is actively exploring the coupling of heat supply and water supply. Relying on the plant's years of seawater desalination operating experience and engineering facilities such as water intake and drainage, it is advancing seawater desalination projects step by step to improve the safety of freshwater resources and alleviate the two major livelihood issues of clean heating and freshwater demand on the Jiaodong Peninsula.
In November 2020, Shandong Nuclear Power completed and put into operation the world's first water-heat co-transmission demonstration project, realizing for the first time a cross-sector combination of heat supply and water supply. On the basis of water-heat co-transmission, in May 2021, in cooperation with Tsinghua University, it completed and put into operation the world's first "water-heat co-production and co-transmission" pilot project, which can directly convert seawater into high-temperature, high-quality freshwater at 95 degrees Celsius, realizing for the first time the three-stage efficient utilization of nuclear energy—first generating electricity, then producing water, and then supplying heat—achieving "zero-energy" water production while providing "zero-carbon" heating. At present, a larger-scale seawater desalination project is being planned and constructed, striving to become an important strategic reserve water source for the Jiaodong Peninsula, reducing dependence on water diverted from the Yellow River and the Yangtze River, indirectly reducing the Yellow River's non-ecological water use, protecting the mother river, and helping the region accelerate the formation of green production and lifestyles.
In addition, the Haiyang Nuclear Power Project creates about 5,000 stable jobs each year and has attracted a large number of nuclear power talents and nuclear power supporting service industries to settle in Haiyang, helping the local area establish two nuclear power equipment manufacturing industrial parks in Haiyang and Laishan, absorbing more than 100 billion yuan in investment and forming a complete industrial chain covering design, research, processing, manufacturing, and operational services. While driving high-quality local economic development, it actively carries out science popularization work to enhance public scientific literacy. Over the past five years, it has carried out more than 150 science popularization activities covering more than one million people, and has won honorary titles such as "China Nuclear Science Popularization Advanced Unit" and "National Electric Power Science Popularization Education Base," providing strong support for building a country strong in science and technology.
