Wuzhishan, Hainan, May 22 (Reporter Ruan Yulin) — Huang Runqiu, President of the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity and Minister of Ecology and Environment of China, said on May 22 that data show that 90% of China's terrestrial ecosystem types and 74% of its nationally key protected wild animal and plant populations are effectively protected.
Speaking at the 2024 International Day for Biological Diversity awareness event held in Wuzhishan City, Hainan Province, that day, Huang Runqiu said biodiversity is the foundation for human survival and development and the lifeblood and cornerstone of the community of life on Earth. As a mega-biodiverse country and one of the earliest parties to sign and ratify the Convention on Biological Diversity, China has consistently attached great importance to biodiversity conservation. It has innovatively implemented the ecological conservation red line system, effectively protecting more than 30% of its land territory. It has promoted the establishment of a protected area system with national parks as the main body. It has continuously strengthened biodiversity surveys, monitoring and assessment, and organized ecosystem resource surveys, species resource surveys and various resource censuses. It has intensified central ecological and environmental protection inspections, carried out the "Green Shield" enhanced supervision of protected areas for seven consecutive years, and cracked down hard on illegal and criminal acts that damage biodiversity.
The National Ecological Status Change (2015–2020) Survey and Assessment shows that China's ecosystem pattern is generally stable and continuously improving, the quality of natural ecosystems continues to improve, and the area share of good and excellent grades has reached more than 43%, exceeding the proportion of low and poor grades for the first time.
As President of COP15, Huang Runqiu said he takes this opportunity to call on all parties to align with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, accelerate the process of mainstreaming biodiversity, update national biodiversity strategies and action plans, and actively mobilize resources from all sides to strengthen biodiversity conservation. Developed countries should honor their commitments, substantially increase support for developing countries in terms of finance, technology and capacity-building, and promote the comprehensive, balanced and effective implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Huang Runqiu said he believes that with the joint efforts of all parties and the international community, and with governments and the whole of society working together, the road to global biodiversity recovery will surely become smoother, and the beautiful vision of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature will certainly be realized at a faster pace.
