A survey covering more than 100 equipment manufacturing enterprises operating in China shows that the internationalization of equipment manufacturing enterprises is developing rapidly, with 88.5% of surveyed enterprises now engaged in international operations, and 81.3% of enterprises focus their international operations on hiring local employees, generating a positive impact on local employment and development.

The survey was conducted by the Equipment Manufacturing Social Responsibility Research Center of China Machinery & Electronics Daily among 120 equipment manufacturing enterprises operating in China, of which state-owned enterprises accounted for 32.1%, foreign-funded enterprises 42.9%, private enterprises 14.3%, and enterprises of other ownership types 10.7%. The industries involved were concentrated in automobiles and parts, construction machinery, machine tools, electric power and energy, and mechanical components, among others. The survey ultimately produced 93 valid samples.

In recent years, the international operations of equipment manufacturing enterprises have developed rapidly. Overall, they have performed well in employee localization, training of international management talent, forms of international operations, local procurement, and promoting the economic development of host locations.

The survey found that 88.5% of surveyed enterprises are currently engaged in international operations, mainly in the forms of establishing wholly owned subsidiaries overseas, participating in international projects, setting up overseas R&D institutions, and establishing overseas joint ventures. For 81.3% of enterprises, the focus of international operations is hiring local employees, which has a positive impact on local employment and development.

In today's global equipment manufacturing industry, competition and profits are increasingly concentrated in front-end value chain activities such as development, sales services, and customer liaison. More enterprises have begun to pay attention to improving relationships with suppliers. The survey shows that 70.6% of enterprises have established support and management for suppliers, and 17.6% are studying or discussing it. However, 11.8% of enterprises have no intention to provide support and management for suppliers.

By enterprise type, foreign-funded enterprises lead in supplier support. The survey results show that 50% of state-owned enterprises and 50% of private enterprises have already provided support to suppliers, while the proportion of foreign-funded enterprises providing support to suppliers reached 87.5%. In addition, 50% of state-owned enterprises are studying and discussing supplier support work.

Regarding industry self-discipline, all interviewed enterprises stated that they adhere to fair business competition to maintain a sound market competition order. At the same time, all surveyed enterprises also stated that they will strictly comply with national laws, regulations, and industry policy requirements. The survey shows that 87.5% of state-owned enterprises, 81.8% of foreign-funded enterprises, and 75.0% of private enterprises participated in formulating industry norms.

It is worth noting that while relevant national authorities have stepped up anti-corruption efforts, some foreign-funded enterprises have also taken action. A relevant person in charge of Sandvik, a globally renowned machine tool manufacturer, introduced that in order to establish a strong anti-corruption framework and a common business ethics culture throughout the group, the company has newly established a department specifically responsible for supervising compliance with anti-corruption legislation globally through robust processes, and has updated and strengthened multiple policies on gifts and hospitality, customer visits, and service procurement.

Regarding the protection of employees' physical and mental health, the survey found that state-owned enterprises have made the most outstanding efforts. 85.7% of state-owned enterprises regularly arrange employee medical examinations, far higher than foreign-funded and private enterprises. At the same time, in terms of employee mental health, 57.1% of state-owned enterprises have employee mental health counselors, and 85.7% of state-owned enterprises regularly arrange occupational disease screenings for employees.

In addition, the survey report also pointed out that the equipment manufacturing industry shoulders the mission of China's transition from a major manufacturing country to a strong manufacturing country. After years of development, China's equipment manufacturing industry has formed an industrial system with complete categories, a large scale, and a certain level of technology, becoming an important pillar industry of the national economy. By combining introduction, digestion, absorption, and independent innovation, and building an open mechanism for scientific and technological innovation, China's equipment manufacturing enterprises have basically achieved the transition from technological following to technological leadership.
