Recently, construction has started on the Yunnan Wenshan–Mengzi Railway (hereinafter referred to as the Wenmeng Railway) project. Once completed, the project will further improve the railway network structure in southern Yunnan.

The Wenmeng Railway is located in southern Yunnan Province, with a total length of about 116 kilometers and a design speed of 160 kilometers per hour. It is a national Class I double-track electrified railway for both passenger and freight traffic. The line starts from Wenshan Station in Wenshan City, Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, runs westward through Mengzi City in Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, and then connects to Mengzi Station. It then follows the newly built second track of the Yuxi–Hekou Railway to Honghe Station on the Mile–Mengzi high-speed railway. A total of seven stations are set up: Wenshan, Matang, Bozhu, Laozhai, Chapini, Mengzi, and Honghe. Among them, Mengzi and Honghe stations are existing stations, while the others are newly built stations. The construction period is 4.5 years.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, the Southern Yunnan Railway Construction Command of China Railway Kunming Group Co., Ltd. coordinated and arranged for the construction unit to organize large machinery and equipment and relevant construction personnel to quickly enter the construction site and start the Wenmeng Railway construction.

"We will earnestly fulfill our primary responsibility for construction, do a good job in construction organization and various basic support work, accelerate the construction of access roads, temporary facilities, and other works, make every effort to advance the main construction of the project, strictly control safety and quality, and strive to build this major railway corridor along the southwestern border with high quality as soon as possible, so that trains can run into Wenshan and benefit the people of all ethnic groups along the line," said Peng Faxin, director of the Engineering Department of the Southern Yunnan Railway Construction Command.

Wang Bin, deputy manager of the Wenmeng Railway Project Department of China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group, introduced that Section 1 of the Wenmeng Railway is a typical comprehensive mountain railway project, characterized by a long construction front, complex geological conditions, and high construction risks. To achieve efficient commencement of the project, they organized personnel and machinery to quickly enter the site and vigorously promoted project construction.

The Wenmeng Railway is an important project in China's medium- and long-term railway network plan for the railway along the southwestern border. Once completed, the project will further improve the road network structure in southeastern Yunnan, build a convenient transportation corridor between the urban agglomerations of central Yunnan and southeastern Yunnan, greatly facilitate the travel of people of all ethnic groups along the line, help the development of tourism and other industries, and be of great significance for accelerating the construction of the border railway corridor and serving Yunnan's high-level opening-up.
