Sanya's “Paper-Thin Building” Appears

Recently, a netizen posted online with photos claiming to have seen a “paper-thin building” on Yunya Avenue in Sanya. On September 13, a reporter visited the site and confirmed that the building does exist, with its narrowest point less than one meter.

As for the reason for the building's appearance, netizen “Fanglan 0028” revealed: “In 2010, the Sanya government expanded the road, and the affected residents' houses had to be demolished. The residents cooperated with the government and signed demolition agreements. The government paid some compensation and provided one year's rent for renting housing. After one year, the rent was no longer paid, and land for building houses was never compensated. The people had to live somewhere, so they built houses on the remaining foundations. Where the remaining foundation was large, the houses looked decent; where the remaining space was small, the houses looked unsightly. But all were set back behind the red line and did not affect planning. The government understood this and did not interfere with the residents' construction.”

On the morning of September 16, regarding the netizen's claims, the reporter interviewed Hu Xiaofeng, deputy section chief of the Planning and Construction Section of the Hedong District Management Committee. According to him, in 2010, due to land acquisition for the Yunya Avenue expansion, the requisitioned residents' houses needed to be demolished. For the displaced households, resettlement land compensation was provided. After the resettlement land was leveled, it was divided into plots and allocated to households, and the displaced households built houses on the resettlement land themselves. However, because the resettlement land had not been fully leveled, all displaced households were provided with rented housing. The temporary transition period stipulated at the time was one year, and transition funds were also provided for one year.

Hu Xiaofeng said that after one year, the resettlement land had still not been fully leveled, and the transition funds had run out. The displaced households had demands to build houses on the remaining land, so they built houses on the original remaining land outside the red line of the government-planned road section. Because this was rural housing construction, no planning or construction application was filed, nor were relevant departments notified.

Hu Xiaofeng told the reporter that there are about 80 displaced households due to the Yunya Avenue expansion. Due to terrain conditions, the planned resettlement land is being actively improved and leveled. Hu Xiaofeng said that next, transition and resettlement funds will continue to be compensated to the displaced households.
