In November 2007, at the 8th Shenzhen Reading Month's "Scent of Books Again" Shenzhen Enterprise Executive Reading Experience Competition, the work "On Reading" by Wang Jiayu, Chairman of Shenzhen Architectural Decoration (Group) Co., Ltd., won the Best Work Award.

In the article, Wang Jiayu wrote:

Still waters run deep—a phrase rarely used in ordinary times, yet rich in connotation. Imagine another world beneath the still water; no one knows how many powerful currents are surging there, with great potential. Still waters run deep is a kind of cultivation, a kind of bearing. The I Ching says: "Only by being deep can one connect with the aspirations of all under heaven." Chinese people emphasize self-cultivation; successful individuals generally have a rich inner world. Those who cultivate themselves often think quietly in joy, and "not being pleased by external gains, not being saddened by personal losses" pushes this thought to the highest realm.

Zhuang, means to carry, great virtue carries all things. "Great virtue carries all things" comes from "The terrain is receptive; the gentleman carries all things with great virtue." As the saying goes, the sea is wide, but not as wide as the heart; the earth is thick, but not as thick as virtue. A person of morality should have a mind as broad and solid as the earth, nurturing and growing all things. In conducting oneself and dealing with the world, one should be broad-minded, aim high, be strict with oneself, and lenient with others. "Great virtue carries all things" has two meanings: in life, one should increase inner substance; in work, one should contribute to society. Virtue means morality; things refer to the objective world other than oneself. Therefore, it requires a person to have noble morals, to care for and cherish others, and to handle interpersonal relationships with fairness, integrity, and kindness. Be kind to others and perfect oneself. "The sea accepts all rivers; tolerance brings greatness"—that is, "with tolerance, virtue becomes great."

Shenzhuang implies that in the continuous development and growth of the enterprise, it dares to take responsibility to employees, shareholders, and society, operates with integrity, complements advantages with partners, and creates a win-win beautiful tomorrow.

The two profound idioms, "still waters run deep" and "great virtue carries all things," are Wang Jiayu's deep interpretation of the naming culture of Shenzhuang Group, which he has served for over 20 years. In fact, these two idioms are also Wang Jiayu's self-description, perfectly suited to expound his life journey of over 60 years, his understanding of work, responsibility, and life.

  "Veteran"

In 1964, Wang Jiayu, a farmer's son, became a glorious soldier of the People's Liberation Army. That year, he was 19 years old.

Even now, Wang Jiayu occasionally says, "Obeying orders is a soldier's duty." This is the mark left by 19 years of military life.

The People's Liberation Army is a great school. In this school, besides military training in the field, Wang Jiayu eagerly read and studied. Young Wang Jiayu was simple-minded. From the day he joined the army, obeying the organization, observing discipline, and completing tasks became important contents and unshakable rules in his life. His character, talent, and ability were quickly recognized by his superiors. During his 19-year military career, he progressed from soldier to squad leader, from platoon leader to battalion and regimental leader, step by step becoming a backbone force in the army. No matter the position, a sense of responsibility became an integral part of Wang Jiayu's life and the most basic principle in his work. The great furnace of the army also shaped his firm worldview and values.

In 1983, by order of the State Council and the Central Military Commission, 20,000 capital construction engineers collectively transferred to Shenzhen to participate in the pioneering and construction of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. From then on, Wang Jiayu moved from the military to the local area, transforming from a cadre engaged in ideological and political work in the army to a leader of a state-owned enterprise, doing economic work.

Wang Jiayu, who loves reading and is diligent in learning, quickly adapted to such changes. From August 1983 to July 1988, Wang Jiayu served as deputy party secretary and secretary of Shenzhen Municipal Engineering Company (now Tianjian Group). From a small fishing village to a leading national metropolis, Shenzhen's ever-changing urban landscape is condensed with the sweat of demobilized soldiers like Wang Jiayu.

In 1986, China's decoration industry was in its infancy, and decoration construction gradually became independent from engineering construction, becoming a specialty. It was at this time that Shenzhen Architectural Decoration General Company was established, the predecessor of today's Shenzhen Architectural Decoration (Group) Co., Ltd. At its inception, the company had only two rented offices and a business license, in the stage of arduous entrepreneurship.

In 1988, the Shenzhen Architectural Decoration General Company, less than two years old, introduced more than 20 professionals, but without a leader, it had been operating in debt. That summer, the organization approached Wang Jiayu and said: "Some people say 'engineering soldiers can't do decoration.' Wang Jiayu, you must win honor for the engineering soldiers and achieve something in decoration engineering!"

In fact, at that time, as an emerging industry, people knew nothing about the company's prospects, and the company's business situation was not good. As the top leader, the pressure would be great, so many people were unwilling to go. However, Wang Jiayu did not hesitate; he resolutely took on this hot potato. In August of that year, Wang Jiayu took office.

"I came to Shenzhen Architectural Decoration General Company as general manager and party secretary in 1988, and only then began to enter the decoration industry. All knowledge related to decoration had to be learned from scratch, like a primary school student, a new recruit." Recalling the situation when he first took over, Wang Jiayu said, "When I first came to the decoration general company, many people did not understand. From a large group company to such a newly established small company, from a place with stable business and good profits to a place with uncertain prospects and poor treatment and conditions. Some people thought 'Wang Jiayu is just coming to be general manager to get some gold plating, so as to climb up.' Some asserted 'Wang Jiayu definitely won't stay long.' However, I have worked in the decoration industry for over 20 years and still hold this position, doing my modest part for the survival and development of the decoration industry, fulfilling my responsibility. I dare not say I have made contributions or achievements, but my true feelings for the decoration industry are persistent; my loyalty to the decoration industry is worthy of heaven and earth. I often call myself a veteran of the decoration industry, which is also a source of pride and honor."

Wang Jiayu's days in the decoration industry were the golden years of his life, the most vigorous and enterprising. During this time, he had opportunities to move to larger groups with higher status and better treatment; he had opportunities to "get promoted" or "get rich," but he was unmoved. Wang Jiayu publicly declared that he would work in the decoration industry for a lifetime and make this company his last post in life. Zhuge Liang said, "I will bend my back to the task until my heart stops beating," and this is exactly the portrayal of Wang Jiayu, a "veteran" of the decoration industry.
