How to Identify Green Environmental Labels on Building Materials

Environmental concerns in home decoration are increasingly becoming the focus of consumers. However, green labels are now ubiquitous in the building materials market; while all claim to be "green," they differ in status and meaning. The so-called "environmental labels" can no longer serve as a reliable basis for consumers to make confident purchases, and instead have trapped consumers in a "green" maze, misleading their consumption.

Industry insiders say there are generally five common environmental labels:

China Environmental Label (Type I): commonly known as the "Ten-Ring" label, this is China's official, highest-level product environmental label. Products approved to use this label have environmental advantages such as low toxicity, low harm, and resource conservation compared with similar products. Only the top 30% of enterprises in the industry are eligible to apply for certification.

China Environmental Label (Type II): also known as the "Environmental Self-Declaration Label." Enterprises may choose one or several of the 12 aspects defined by international standards—"compostable, degradable, design for disassembly, extended-life products, use of recovered energy, recyclable, recycled content, energy saving, resource saving, water saving, reusable and refillable, and reduced waste"—to make a declaration, which is then verified by a third party.

China Environmental Label (Type III): also known as the "Environmental Information Declaration Label." Enterprises may disclose one or more pieces of environmental information about their products based on what the public cares about most, subject to third-party verification. For example, if an enterprise claims its product has low formaldehyde content, it must disclose the specific formaldehyde data and, after verification by a certification body, be authorized to use the label.

The Type I environmental label is the most authoritative and has the most comprehensive verification. Type II and Type III environmental labels cover a broader scope and are more adaptable, with relatively simple procedures, allowing enterprises that perform well in individual aspects but do not meet Type I standards to publicly disclose, through proper channels, the product environmental information they are most proud of and that the public cares about most, and obtain certification. The Type II and Type III environmental label certificates contain specific environmental information, and consumers need to read them carefully to confirm in which aspect the product actually meets environmental requirements.

China Environmental Protection Product Certification Mark: the certification scope of this mark includes environmentally friendly products closely related to people's lives, such as panels, coatings, and furniture, as well as comprehensive utilization products.
