Earlier this year, Jackie Chan sparked controversy by donating four of his collected "old houses"——Hui-style ancient buildings——to Singapore, with many netizens expressing displeasure over Chan giving the "old houses" to a foreign country. Yesterday in Beijing, Chan announced that he will cooperate with the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area Administrative Committee to jointly build a "Jackie Chan World Park" in Yizhuang, where no fewer than four "old houses" will be situated.

Chan revealed that no fewer than four old houses will be placed in the "Jackie Chan World Park," to be located on an island in the center of the park's lake. "The placement of the buildings must follow a layout; you can't just pile them up there. We'll have to look at the actual area at the time. If four large houses aren't enough, I'll add one more." As for admission fees, Chan said 60% of the area will be free of charge and 40% will charge fees to fund the park's maintenance.

Chan said with emotion that buying the old houses in the first place was spending money to buy trouble——he spent a great deal of money on maintenance and restoration, and in the end got only criticism for giving them away. Fortunately, he has now found a way out for at least eight old houses, and Chan admitted it feels like shedding part of a burden, making him much more relaxed. As for the remaining old houses still under restoration, Chan hopes to keep them in China. "Next it depends on which places have the affinity. Many places have asked me for them, but first I look at whether the project is good and whether it's legitimate. Once a place promised me 500 mu of land to place these old houses, but later I investigated and found there were villas right behind it, so I immediately stopped the cooperation."

Besides the old houses, Chan has collected many other things, most of which are stored in a 10,000-square-meter warehouse in Hong Kong. He also plans to donate them all, placing them by category in the Jackie Chan Art Museum in Shanghai, the "Jackie Chan World Park" in Beijing, and the still-in-preparation "Jackie Chan Peace Park," for public viewing. "I was very poor as a child and wanted to buy everything. Later, when I had money, I bought everything. I've been to so many places for filming, and whenever I saw all kinds of things that interested me, I bought them and brought them back. Many of the things have stories." Chan said one reason he collects ancient buildings is to let young people who drive foreign cars and live in foreign-style houses know how beautiful Chinese ancient architecture is. When a reporter asked about his earlier revelation that he would collaborate with Zhang Yimou, Chan joked: "Haha, I let it slip. I don't know! I don't know..."
