(Weibo): With the development of China's economy and the rapid growth of Chinese architecture, architectural firms have also achieved great development. This has been a rare decade, and you have experienced the development and transformation in between. What changes have occurred in the architectural design field over these ten years? What opportunities has your company experienced?

Song Zhaoqing: The development of architectural design firms in China is concerning. Much of it is growth in scale, while development in technical accumulation, design innovation, personnel training, and the refinement of architectural design is far from sufficient. It has merely developed alongside the real estate industry and construction volume. I believe this kind of development is debatable.

The rapid expansion of construction volume has brought an increase in architectural practice. This increase in architectural practice represents opportunities that architects in other countries could not experience or practice within decades or even a long period of time. We have seized such opportunities. But looking at these opportunities from another perspective, due to the control of construction cost, the relative imperfection and lack of master planning, and the imperfect management system, much work has been consumed in repetition and rework.

Real Estate: Over these 10 years, the real estate industry has undergone great changes, especially residential products. While housing prices have soared, what optimizations have been made in design?

Song Zhaoqing: In the course of human development, the emergence of cities was due to the requirements of aggregation and culture. However, the largest gathering place for humans is not the box of the house itself; what is actually more important is that people live in the city, in the environment, and in the location. Therefore, I believe more attention should be paid to research in these areas—urban design, outdoor space, social space, urban distribution centers, and urban transportation and communication—integrating the operation of an entire city into the scope of real estate development and culture, so as to truly and meaningfully promote real estate development.

Real Estate: In recent years, have you had any projects that left a deep impression on you or into which you put a great deal of effort?

Song Zhaoqing: There are indeed projects into which we have put a certain amount of effort, but opportunities to devote a great deal of effort to studying a perfect work are actually not many. Moreover, as an architect, one's eyes must always be on the road ahead and on the future, hoping to realize certain ideas and hopes in the next work. Given the current rapid social development in China, I do not think we have the opportunity to wholeheartedly create a perfect work.
