Recently, the team behind the Fehmarn immersed tunnel, the longest immersed tunnel in the world, is preparing to build a brand-new viewing platform. The construction team hopes this platform will give the public a better understanding of the Fehmarn immersed tunnel and attract more tourists to the area. Let's take a look with the editor!
Viewing Platform
The new viewing platform for the Fehmarn Tunnel will be built on the Danish side of the tunnel, near the tunnel entrance, giving the public an opportunity to observe the tunnel construction process up close. The entire platform is expected to be completed in 2025.

Conceptual rendering of the viewing platform landscape
The platform is 217 m long, and its overall structure is a gradually rising pointed ramp extending 217 m beyond the reclaimed area. The end of the platform is arrow-shaped and points toward the German direction of the tunnel. The highest point of the ramp will be 24 m above the surrounding landscape, allowing visitors to view the overall landscape during the construction of the Fehmarn Tunnel.

The project team is confident that this viewing platform will be very popular and will bring many tourists to the region. The project team also hopes that by showcasing the magnificent views of the Fehmarn Tunnel construction site, it will inspire the next generation of young people to pursue careers in the construction industry.

Project background
The Fehmarn immersed tunnel project is part of the Trans-European railway project, connecting Germany and Denmark. The entire tunnel is 18.1 km long, of which the immersed tube sections total 17.6 km. Once completed, it will become the longest immersed tunnel in the world.

Construction site
The entire immersed tunnel consists of two different types of tube elements, including a total of 79 standard elements and 10 special elements. At present, the element prefabrication factory is ready for full operation, and the first batch of tube elements will be ready by the end of 2023 or early 2024. The transport and immersion of the concrete tube elements will take place in the middle of the overall construction period and will be completed by the end of 2027 or 2028.

Tube element factory
At present, more than 95% of the excavation work for the 18-kilometer-long tunnel trench has been completed; in addition, land reclamation is also proceeding at full speed, with about 300 hm² of new land being created along the Lolland coast in Denmark.
