On November 16, the Wuhan-Yangxin Expressway (hereinafter referred to as the "Wuyang Expressway") was officially completed and opened to traffic along its entire line. With this, the drive from Wuhan to Daye has been shortened to 40 minutes, and the drive from Wuhan to Yangxin to 1 hour. In the future, the Wuyang Expressway will connect with the planned Jiangxi Wuning to Hubei Yangxin (Hubei-Jiangxi border) Expressway, helping to accelerate the formation of a 3-hour expressway traffic circle linking Changsha, Wuhan, and Nanchang.
The Wuyang Expressway starts in the north at the Fenghuangshan Interchange in Wuhan's East Lake High-tech Development Zone and ends in the south at Heshan Tang (the Jiangxi-Hubei border), with a total length of 126 kilometers. The road has four to six lanes in each direction and is divided into the Wuhan section, the Ezhou section, and the Huangshi section. The Huangshi section, as the longest, has a total length of 91.308 kilometers and an estimated investment of 13.172 billion yuan; it is co-invested in and constructed by China Energy Engineering Corporation's Gezhouba Group. The Huangshi section project begins at Dongfeng Farm in Daye City and ends at Heshan Tang, passing through 14 townships in Daye and Yangxin. The entire line features 72 bridges and 4 tunnels, with a design speed of 100 kilometers per hour.
The Huangshi section of the Wuyang Expressway is the largest single-investment transportation project since the establishment of Huangshi City. With an interchange every 10-plus kilometers, it not only builds a fast and convenient intercity transportation network linking Wuhan, Huangshi, and Nanchang, but will also directly benefit the people along the route in 14 townships in Daye and Yangxin, making it a veritable road for people's livelihood and prosperity.
Zheng Zicai, Deputy Party Secretary and General Manager of the Wuyang Expressway Project Company under China Energy Engineering Corporation's Gezhouba Transportation Investment, introduced that the Huangshi section of the Wuyang Expressway project adopted a cooperation model of "equity cooperation + BOT + general construction contracting." Construction began in July 2020 and was completed in September 2023, achieving the construction target 9 months ahead of the approved construction period. The project adopted various "smart construction" equipment such as an intelligent tunnel access control and monitoring system and an intelligent safety monitoring system for bridge-erecting machines, as well as specialized mechanical equipment such as "unmanned" paving technology and multi-boom rock drilling jumbos, improving construction safety, quality, and efficiency. At the same time, the Wuyang Expressway actively explored and promoted application scenarios for transportation-energy integration, using the rooftops of the project's service areas and toll stations to install photovoltaic panels.
It is reported that the Wuyang Expressway is a key project in the "Development Plan for the Urban Agglomeration in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River" and the "Outline of the 13th Five-Year Development Plan for Highway and Waterway Transportation in Hubei Province," and is also an important component of the Ningde-Wuhan Expressway of the national highway network. The official opening of the Huangshi section of the Wuyang Expressway not only further improves the road network in the southeastern part of the Wuhan metropolitan area and effectively boosts the integrated development of Wuhan, Ezhou, and Huangshi, but also opens up the most convenient corridor between Wuhan and Nanchang, the "central triangle" linking the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, promoting coordinated and integrated regional development of the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River.
