Qumutang Reservoir Hub Officially Closes Gates to Impound Water‍

On October 20, the Qumutang Reservoir Project Hub in Hunan officially began impounding water, marking the project's transition from construction to operation and laying a solid foundation for the first unit to generate electricity and for comprehensive benefits.

The Qumutang Reservoir Project is one of the 172 major water-saving and water-supply projects determined by the State Council, a backbone water conservancy project to solve the water shortage problem in the 'Hengshao Drought Corridor' of Hunan Province, and the largest single water conservancy project in terms of investment scale in Hunan Province since the founding of New China. The estimated total investment of the project is 10.25 billion yuan, involving 9 counties (cities, districts) in 4 cities of Shaoyang, Hengyang, Yongzhou, and Loudi, with many points, wide coverage, and long lines.

The Qumutang Reservoir Project is a Class II large (2) water conservancy and hydropower project, divided into two major parts: the hub and the irrigation area. The normal water level of the hub reservoir is 215 meters, with a total storage capacity of about 140 million cubic meters and an annual power generation of 115 million kilowatt-hours; the main and branch canals in the irrigation area have a total length of about 223.3 kilometers, with an average annual water diversion of 320 million cubic meters and a designed irrigation area of 1.1316 million mu. The construction tasks are mainly to ensure agricultural irrigation, combined with urban and rural water supply and improvement of the water ecological environment in the irrigation area, and also have comprehensive utilization benefits such as navigation and power generation.

After impounding, the Qumutang Reservoir Project will divert water from the Zi River to the Hengshao Drought Corridor through measures such as storage, lifting, diversion, regulation, and irrigation, optimizing the regional water resource allocation. At that time, it can improve and add 1.1316 million mu of irrigation area, solve the water shortage for farmland irrigation within the irrigation area, and increase grain production by an average of 140 million kilograms per year; it can ensure water supply for 900,000 people in Shaodong City and Qidong County, effectively solve the problem of improving the quality and efficiency of drinking water for 702,000 rural people within the irrigation area, and also improve the ecological environment of rivers such as the Hongqi River in the irrigation area.‍

Nanmu Water Supplement Main Pipe and Jintian and Luowang Irrigation Sub-areas of the Datengxia Water Conservancy Hub Irrigation Project Are Steadily Advancing‍

On October 16, at the construction site of the Nanmu water supplement main pipe and Jintian and Luowang irrigation sub-areas of the Datengxia Water Conservancy Hub Irrigation Project, multiple machines were operating back and forth, and construction workers were assigned responsibilities and working in an orderly manner, seizing the fine weather to accelerate the project progress, presenting a busy construction scene.

It is understood that the total investment of the Nanmu water supplement main pipe and Jintian and Luowang irrigation sub-areas of the Datengxia Water Conservancy Hub Irrigation Project is 1.413 billion yuan. The main construction content includes the Nanmu water supplement main pipe and related ancillary buildings, and the continued construction and supporting projects of the Jintian and Luowang irrigation sub-areas. Among them, the Nanmu water supplement main pipe has a total length of about 22 kilometers; the Jintian irrigation sub-area has 14 main and branch canals with a total length of about 117 kilometers; the Luowang irrigation sub-area has 6 main and branch canals with a total length of about 35 kilometers. At present, the project has 16 construction work faces operating simultaneously, and all work is progressing steadily.

"At present, we have completed 19 kilometers of pipeline excavation, 16.8 kilometers of pipeline installation, and 13 kilometers of foundation pit backfilling. The remaining pipeline construction is mainly for crossing roads and rivers, including 3 river crossings and 7 road crossings. We plan to complete all pipeline installation by the end of this year," said Wang Changbiao, the on-site technical director of the Nanmu section project of the Datengxia Water Conservancy Hub Irrigation Project of China Railway No.10 Engineering Group.

The Datengxia Water Conservancy Hub Irrigation Project is a supporting project of the Datengxia Water Conservancy Hub Project, one of the 150 major water conservancy projects deployed and implemented by the State Council, and one of the 6 major irrigation area projects to be promoted and started in 2022. The designed irrigation area is 66,700 hectares. After completion, it can fully play the role of irrigation water supply and regional water resource allocation.‍

Main Dam of Maiwan Water Conservancy Hub Project Enters the Sprint Stage of Capping

First cap of the Maiwan Water Conservancy Hub Project

Recently, as the last batch of concrete poured into the No. 17 dam section, the No. 17 dam section of the main dam of the Maiwan Water Conservancy Hub Project, located at the junction of Chengmai and Tunchang counties, was successfully poured to an elevation of 113 meters, marking that the entire main dam has entered the sprint stage of capping.

According to reports, the No. 17 dam section, which was the first to be capped, is located in the right bank water-retaining dam section, with a concrete pouring volume of 429.5 cubic meters. It is understood that the main dam of the Maiwan Water Conservancy Hub Project is a roller-compacted concrete gravity dam with a total length of 376.5 meters and a maximum dam height of 78.5 meters. It consists of water-retaining dam sections, overflow dam sections, intake dam sections, powerhouse at the dam toe, fish passage facilities, and the canal head of the right bank irrigation area, and is divided into 20 dam sections.‍

Muqiaogou Aqueduct of Xiangjiaba Irrigation Area Completed Concrete Pouring

On October 20, after 7 hours of continuous operation and a total of 216 cubic meters of concrete pouring, the last span of the Muqiaogou Aqueduct, the longest aqueduct in the Zigong section of the Qiu Chang branch main canal of the first phase and first step of the North Main Canal of the Xiangjiaba Irrigation Area, completed pouring on the 18th, marking the completion of the entire aqueduct body construction.

The Muqiaogou Aqueduct is a key and difficult project in the Zigong section of the Qiu Chang branch main canal of the first phase and first step of the North Main Canal of the Xiangjiaba Irrigation Area. It has a total length of 357 meters, with 13 pier columns for the aqueduct body, and a design flow of 20 cubic meters per second. Because it crosses the Zhenxi River, 2 pier columns are built in the river channel, and 8 underwater pile foundations of 26 meters in length are installed below the pier columns. The pier columns above the water surface are 48 meters high, which undoubtedly increases the construction difficulty.

Muqiaogou Aqueduct under pouring

After on-site surveys and multiple discussions, the participating parties finally decided to use the method of 'underwater piles' plus 'underwater pile caps' for construction. "Simply put, the construction is mainly divided into three parts: first, pour the underwater pile foundation at the riverbed, then use steel sheet piles to construct a cofferdam, pour the underwater pile cap within the cofferdam, and finally pour the pier columns on the pile cap," explained the person in charge of the Xiangjiaba Irrigation Area Project Department of Sinohydro Bureau 14 Co., Ltd.

Up to now, the first phase and first step of the North Main Canal of the Xiangjiaba Irrigation Area has completed an investment of 1.54 billion yuan, with 97.88 kilometers of tunnel excavation, 73.56 kilometers of tunnel lining, and 4.36 kilometers of aqueducts, and 87% of the entire project progress has been completed.

It is understood that after the entire Xiangjiaba Irrigation Area Project is completed, it will cover 22 counties (districts) in 5 cities of two provinces, including Yibin City, Zigong City, Neijiang City, Luzhou City in Sichuan Province and Zhaotong City in Yunnan Province. It can supplement and solve the water use problem of 143 towns and more than 4 million rural people in the irrigation area, and supply water to the surrounding urban areas of Zigong, Neijiang, and Longchang. It will end the history of no large-scale backbone water conservancy projects in the southern Sichuan area, fundamentally solve the irrigation, production, and domestic water problems of 5.3 million mu of farmland in the irrigation area, and is of great significance for ensuring the safety of urban and rural water supply in the southern Sichuan economic zone and helping to build a higher-level 'Tianfu Granary' in the new era.‍
