Construction Insights: My Understanding of the Three Key Elements of Dynamic Compaction

As the saying goes, success in any endeavor depends on favorable timing, geographical advantages, and harmony among people; the more fully these three elements are present, the more results are achieved with half the effort.

For dynamic compaction construction, favorable timing mainly refers to the influence of weather, such as rainfall and strong winds. During rainfall, rainwater mixes with dust to form mud, obstructing the operator's line of sight; rainfall increases the moisture content of the surface soil, and at the moment the tamper hits the ground, a large amount of splatter is produced, with splatter distances reaching up to hundreds of meters, posing a huge safety hazard to surrounding personnel, machinery, and buildings. Heavy rainfall also increases the moisture content of deeper soil, which is detrimental to post-compaction quality control. Therefore, in rainy weather, dynamic compaction construction generally comes to a halt, and personnel may even need to be organized in advance to take waterproofing measures on the working surface. Strong winds of level 6-7 or above may affect the stability of the dynamic compaction machine, and in northern regions strong winds can carry sand and dust, obstructing the operator's line of sight and creating safety hazards.

The geographical advantages for dynamic compaction construction fall into two categories. One is the geographical location of the construction area. Because dynamic compaction generates huge vibration waves, slight tremors, and noise from the tamper impacting the ground, it can interfere to some extent with the stability of surrounding buildings and the lives of people and livestock. Therefore, dynamic compaction construction areas are generally far from densely populated areas; otherwise, during construction, nearby residents may complain or obstruct the work, thereby affecting the normal construction schedule. The other category is the soil conditions in the construction area; differences in soil quality also have varying effects on dynamic compaction construction. Sandy soil has poor consolidation and generally low moisture content, often requiring water injection before construction. Silt has collapsibility and undergoes natural settlement when encountering water; excessively high moisture content tends to form rubber soil. Silty clay expands when wet and shrinks when dry, and during construction often exhibits tamper suction, while also hindering the dissipation of pore water. Stone backfill areas are generally unaffected by moisture, but stone backfill has gradation requirements, and most stone backfill work struggles to meet this, so strict control is required during construction; otherwise, a large number of voids will remain in the soil after compaction. Most project soils are not a single type of soil but often an irregular mixture of soil, sand, and stone, or contain construction waste, or even domestic waste or decayed vegetation. Differences in soil have a significant impact on post-compaction quality, so before construction of any project, detailed observation and analysis of geological survey data and on-site soil are required.

Harmony among people is the most important part of any project construction. No matter what form of obstacle arises in terms of timing or geographical conditions, whether the problem can ultimately be resolved smoothly depends on human factors. From the owner, the general contractor, and the supervisor to the construction party, it is rare for all parties to work together with one heart when problems arise; differences in the starting points of each party's interests often lead to different ways and methods of solving problems, so trivial matters frequently become complicated. How to balance the interests of all parties and handle problems arising in on-site production with the minimum cost and in the shortest time has become the most common issue.

The dynamic compaction construction process is very simple, and the conditions at each project site are different. We must not only have a thorough understanding of the timing and geographical conditions but also do a great deal of work to maintain the main project stakeholders. No matter what problems are encountered, facing difficulties head-on and maintaining a positive attitude are the mindset and attitude needed to ensure smooth progress of the work.
