Magnitude and nature of loads acting on foundation soils:

The nature of building loads also affects the choice of foundation embedment depth. For foundations primarily subjected to axial compression, the embedment depth only needs to satisfy the requirements for foundation soil strength and deformation; for foundations subjected to horizontal loads, sufficient embedment depth is also required to satisfy stability requirements; for foundations subjected to uplift forces (transmission tower foundations), a relatively large embedment depth is also required to ensure sufficient uplift resistance. For high-rise buildings, due to large loads and horizontal loads such as wind and seismic forces, in order to satisfy stability requirements and reduce overall building tilt, the foundation embedment depth should generally be no less than 1/12 to 1/8 of the building height above ground.
