Recently, the Xishan Tunnel, a controlling project of the Urumqi Ring Expressway (West Line) undertaken by PowerChina Roadbridge Group Co., Ltd., was successfully holed through, marking the full breakthrough of this mountain tunnel, which is the largest-cross-section and longest single-tube four-lane expressway mountain tunnel under construction in China, laying a solid foundation for the main line to meet the conditions for opening to traffic by the end of the year. The left tube of the tunnel is 2,601.77 meters long and the right tube is 2,616 meters long, connecting Sardaoban Township in the Urumqi Economic and Technological Development Zone (Toutunhe District) and the Toutunhe No. 1 Bridge at the two ends respectively.

The Urumqi Ring Expressway (West Line) project is 93.616 kilometers long, designed to the standard of a two-way eight-lane expressway with a design speed of 100 kilometers per hour. The project starts at the Ulapo West Junction Interchange, connects with the already-built Urumqi Ring Expressway (East Line), ends at the Midong North Junction Interchange, and terminates at the Ganquanpu Composite Junction Interchange. There are two tunnels along the entire line, namely the Xishan Tunnel and the Wuyi Tunnel. At present, the Xishan Tunnel has been fully holed through and has entered the construction of ancillary facilities such as secondary lining, pavement and electromechanical systems, and is expected to be completed within the year; the Wuyi Tunnel is expected to be holed through in mid-to-late September.
