Recently, the new-type slurry balance shield machine "Yuehai Huanbei No. 8", jointly built by CRCHI and China Railway 12th Bureau Group, rolled off the production line in Changsha, Hunan. With a total length of 135 meters and an excavation diameter of 6.28 meters, the equipment is the first shield machine to roll off the line for the entire Ring Beibu Gulf Guangdong Water Resources Allocation Project, and will be used in the construction of the tunnel on Section D1 of the project.

The tunnel on Section D1 of the Ring Beibu Gulf Guangdong Water Resources Allocation Project has a total length of 10.19 kilometers, of which the "Yuehai Huanbei No. 8" shield machine needs to complete a tunneling task of 3,908.3 meters. The geology in this section is mainly completely, strongly and weakly weathered metamorphic sandstone, with the remainder passing through fault breccia and limestone strata, crossing a total of 25 developed faults. The long-distance crossing of hard rock, mixed hard-soft strata and densely water-rich fault zones is prone to construction risks such as shield machine instability and material stagnation and chamber blockage, thus placing extremely high demands on the shield machine's attitude control capability and mucking performance.

In response to the above engineering difficulties, the CRCHI R&D team equipped the "Yuehai Huanbei No. 8" shield machine with a number of advanced innovative technologies and numerous proprietary core key technologies. In particular, it applied a new "multi-channel + multi-circuit" mucking mode design, which can effectively solve the problems of chamber blockage and pipe blockage caused by the stagnation of large particles such as those from fault zones at the bottom of the excavation chamber, strongly ensuring the speed and safety of the shield machine's tunneling under complex geological conditions.

It is reported that the Ring Beibu Gulf Water Resources Allocation Project is the major water conservancy project in Guangdong with the largest investment scale, the longest water conveyance route, the most complex construction conditions and the broadest impact to date. Once completed, the project will systematically solve the water shortage problem in western Guangdong, greatly improve the regional water supply capacity and significantly improve the regional water ecological environment, and is of great significance for enhancing the comprehensive carrying capacity of the western wing of the coastal economic belt and accelerating the construction of the regional development pattern of "one core, one belt, one region".
